Mary could not believe what she had seen. First, she was suddenly surrounded by several hunters, with guns aiming at her. She saw the boy, John, with them, so it was obvious who had betrayed her. Then, just when she was about to surrender, a huge dragon landed above her cave, and started spewing fiery death around her.
Mary was no fool. She knew that Amy must have used one of the vials to change into an animal to try to save her. But Mary could not understand how the sweet innocent girl she had first met could become so cruel and vicious.
Through the flames Mary could see John hiding, cowering in fear behind a large rock. He had already been cut pretty badly by flying shrapnel. Mary couldn't let him get hurt even worse. She knew that Amy would never be able to forgive herself if she seriously injured her brother. Mary dashed out of the cave, dodging the flames and racing towards John. John saw her coming, and his eyes went wide. He must have thought she was coming to get him, to hurt him in revenge for his betrayal. She tried to call to him, but her voice must have sounded like aggressive screeches to him. He tripped and fell, smacking his head on a large rock.
Mary ran to John, and cradled him protectively in her arms. Thankfully, he was still alive. Just unconscious, probably with a bad concussion. Mary held John in her arms, trying to shield him from the flames and flying shrapnel. Suddenly, the fiery reign of death stopped. The forest was quiet, with the exception of the heavy breathing of the Dragon. She could sense that it was staring at them. She could not bear to look at it, to face death. She closed her eyes, and silently prayed that she and John died quick.
Mary was quite surprised when she felt a strong gust of wind, as the dragon flapped its wings and lifted off the ground. She turned and saw the sad face of the Dragon, and knew that the Amy she first met was still in there, trapped in the body of a monster. She tried to call out to her, but Amy flew away too quickly. She thought about following her, but she looked down at the hurt boy in her arms. She needed to get John to safety first. Then she would find Amy, and help her, too.
