Amy and Mary walked silently deeper into the cave. Amy was glad that Mara was now letting her use her real name but she was curious about the Gryphon.
"Mara?" asked Amy.
"Yeah?" replied Mary.
"What's it like where you live? Is it wonderful and magical?" asked Amy wistfully.
Mary sighed. She didn't have the nerve to break the poor kid's heart and tell her the truth. But the Gryphon stuff was getting old real fast. She decided to use another method to nip her questions in the bud.
"No, " replied Mary flatly. "It is really boring and empty. Your world is much more exciting. You would be better off returning to your farm. It sounds very nice."
Amy frowned. "But surely it is filled with magical creatures? You must have wonderful adventures with your magical friends?" asked Amy.
"Nope. I'm all alone, " said Mary.
"What! " said Amy with shock. "What about the other Gryphons? You don't have a Mom or Dad or brothers or sisters? Or even your own family with your boyfriend?"
Mary was beginning to get aggravated. She decided to turn it up a notch. "Well, I used to. But the goblins killed them all. Now I am the only one. I am the last Gryphon, " said Mary.
"Goblins? I thought you said that there weren't any other magical creatures? " asked Amy.
Mary grunted. "Goblins aren't magical. They are just evil and mean. Just like all the other monsters that live where I come from. They don't have magic, but they like to eat magical creatures. Especially little fairies. Look, let's not talk about it anymore. It is a very painful memory. Just trust me. We are better off here, at your farm, " said Mary.
Amy was quiet, and Mary thought she had been successful. But actually it had the opposite effect. Amy felt very sorry for Mara, and wanted to help her. It must be sad to be all alone, the last of her kind. Amy wanted to help her, but she wasn't sure how she could help. She knew her magic could help, but she just needed to think of the right wish.
