Mary Lou's new life was rather strange now. Once she had been a zoo exhibit, now she was a zookeeper. She wanted to quit her job, to get as far away from this zoo as possible. However, she wasn't just any human, she was Evelyn specifically. And Evelyn had a life here that Mary Lou had been working hard to keep up with. She had to keep up the charade that she was really Evelyn, though Adam was growing more concerned with her lapses of memory. Fortunately, a nice round of sex usually alleviated his suspicions.
While Mary Lou had no great love for the human race, she was learning to really appreciate this new form. Humans were incredibly weak and delicate, but that sensitivity could be used for a pleasure she had never really known as an alligator. Mary Lou was glad that Evelyn had a rather thick and easily-distracted mate or she'd have blown her cover several times over. It would be simpler if they could just move away from here, far from anyone who would know Evelyn, but this thing called 'money' was slow in coming and she required much more of it to really be able to move.
However, Mary Lou did find a perverse joy in looking after the animals. She couldn't really torment them without getting into trouble, but she was able to get away with not giving them enough food or waiting a little too long with cleaning their exhibits. They all had a more luxuriant life than she had, so she felt that they ought to know a little misery of their own.
Mary Lou did feel a tiny bit of guilt over Evelyn, but not nearly enough to make her want to trade back. Being human had too many perks and it was infinitely better than being a zoo animal. She might try later to make some movement to seeing 'Mary Lou' released into the wild, but seeing as she was a star attraction here, that was not going to be any time soon.
Of course, Mary Lou was never foolish enough to get close to Evelyn. The former-woman-turned-alligator would certainly try to take her leg off at the very least. But she did swing by the alligator exhibit to check how she was from time to time, preferably from downwind or when Evelyn would be asleep.
Today, she actually felt bold enough to look at Evelyn from the entrance to the enclosure. The alligator wouldn't be able to get through the door, though she will be awfully mad about the tantalizing closeness. When Mary Lou looked out the door, she saw that another zookeeper was there, that new girl Kim. She seemed like a nice girl, a bit too soft to Mary Lou's taste.
From this far away, Mary Lou was able to make out that Kim was giving Evelyn a bath. Mary Lou hoped that Evelyn didn't miss the irony of it. But her smug grin vanished when she saw the bottle Kim was using. It was the indigo shampoo, the one that caused Mary Lou and Evelyn to swap lives. If Evelyn became human enough to open the door, she'd tear Mary Lou apart before she could do anything.
Mary Lou opened the door and yelled, "Stop! Don't use that shampoo!" She ran forward to grab at the bottle. Evelyn turned and bellowed at her. She was not going to be denied this chance. The large alligator surged forward, knocking into Kim. Kim staggered before falling forward and into Mary Lou. Mary Lou soon found herself on the ground as she tried to push Kim off of her. Then she was bowled over by Evelyn and then pinned in place when the gator crawled over her and rested her large body on top of her. Kim got up and struggled to pull Evelyn off while Mary Lou squirmed underneath. And during all this mess, the bucket had been knocked over, splashing all three with its soapy contents.
