The Vials

Max becomes an average person

added by JosieHadley 7 years ago O

Max found it easy to slip into Mary's life and assume her identity. She had no friends, and her co-workers barely spoke to her. Any eccentricities were easily brushed off as a result of the trauma of the attack. It was generally believed that a wild animal had somehow wandered into the building, eaten the dog, Max, and attacked Mary. John just brushed off Mary's ravings about Max turning into a beast as the result of the shock.

Max had a little trouble at work. Mary's job was surprisingly easy, but it did require knowledge of the English language. Her employers gave her some leeway, and Max tried to learn quickly. But eventually, they had to let Mary go. But it was okay. Her new boyfriend, John, was happy to take her in, and re-teach her the English language. Max was very grateful, but insisted that they move to another apartment complex. John was hesitant at first, but he did love Mary, so he gave in to her demands.

Max assumed the role of a happy housewife. He had a home, a mate, and a plentiful supply of food provided by his mate. And in his home, he was the Alpha. With a little subtle manipulation, he could always bend John to his will. He still had a lot to learn about human culture, but it was fun to learn, and John was a good teacher. Life was good.

But as he stared out the window of their new apartment at the dark outside, he did have one nagging fear. Mary - the real Mary - was still out there. And probably very angry at him. He had heard about the massive hunt for the creature that attacked him. It lasted several weeks, but ended in failure. Most people just assumed the creature was dead, or never existed at all. But Max knew better. He had seen the television news reports of dead animals mauled by some strange creature. He knew Mary was alive, and feeding. It was only a matter of time before she began to hunt for him.

His fears were interrupted by John, hugging Max from behind and kissing him on the cheek. Max didn't really like kissing. He found licking much more fun. But it was one of the many sacrifices he made to be human. John's warm embrace calmed his fear. As long as he had John, he would be safe. Maybe it was time to convince him to move out of town.

Max looked at the pantry. He had hidden the box of vials on the floor at the back of the pantry below some shelves. When they moved, he would take them with him. You never knew when they might be useful again. Maybe John would like to try living on the wild side, as a dog. He occasionally missed it himself. But for now, he was content.
