Mary decided to explore the forest. She wanted to have a little fun, and she was very hungry. She ran stealthily through the woods, and saw a wounded animal. It smelled so good. Mary decided to follow it, and finish it off. After she took it back to her cave, it would make a good meal. She was so intent on her prey she failed to notice the hunter behind her until it was too late. He had been tracking the animal he wounded, but now he saw a better catch - a fearsome monster! He lined up his shot and fired.
Mary heard the rifle fire, and felt the bullet whizz by her head. She turned to confront the hunter. She held her hands up, trying to calm the hunter.
"Wait! Don't shoot! You don't understand. I'm hum- " began Mary.
The hunter fired again, and a second bullet tore through her shoulder. She turned and ran. Mary cursed her cowardice as she ran. She had superior strength and agility, but she lacked the killer instinct. Her compassion and humanity had almost gotten her killed. She ran back to the cave. She needed to take another vial. Perhaps changing into another animal would help heal her wound. In the cave, she rifled through the vials.
Outside she could hear the hunter approaching. He had tracked her blood trail to the cave, just like a wounded animal. She clenched the vial in her hand tightly.
He wants an animal, I'll give him an animal, thought Mary, as she downed half of the shark vial. She vaguely remembered that sharks healed quickly. Wasn't that why everyone took shark cartilage as a supplement? The blood loss was making it difficult to think. Or maybe she had taken too many animal vials. What percentage of her was still human? She couldn't remember.
She was beginning to think she had made a mistake, and reached for the human vial when the changes began. Her skin became sleek and smooth, with the pattern of a leopard. Her tail thickened into the tail of a shark. She retained her claws, but webbing formed between her fingers and toes. Her snout grew longer and more slender, and filled with sharp pointy teeth. A large fin erupted from her back. Gills formed on her neck. They felt dry, but she found that she could still breath normally through her throat. Her ears receded into her smooth head. Thankfully, she retained her arms and legs, but they were now covered by the same sleek shark skin. Finally, her pupils dilated until her eyes appeared to be black.
Mary still felt confused, wrong. She thought that she had better change back. But the smell of her blood was driving her crazy. She heard the hunter approaching her cave, and her stomach growled. She no longer worried about harming people. She considered the man outside nothing more than food. And she was very hungry.
Maybe I will change back, thought Mary. After I have a little snack.
Mary lunged out of the cave, letting her animal instincts take over and letting loose the killer within her.
