Marvin smiled and asked, "Have you ever watched a lava lamp?"
Daniel was taken aback by the randomness of the question, "uh, yeah I guess."
"The universes are kind of like the globs of wax. There is a source, there is wax on the bottom, there is wax on the top, and there is wax in transition going up and coming down."
"Um, okay?"
"Imagine that three dimensionally. Each glob of wax is an entire universe with billions of galaxies and trillions upon trillions of stars, each potentially holding life. This universe, everything your science has discovered, is just a small bubble in the everything." Marvin paused to let that sink in for a second. "There are other universes, millions of them. some dead, some conquered, some harvested."
Daniel was confused but didn't interrupt, "Imagine if you could rip apart a black hole, a million times bigger than your Sun, and use it for energy. That technology exists, outside your universe, and is being used to attempt to punch a hole into the 18th dimension. These beings have obliterated countless galaxies in their quest for more power. They exist in that top layer of wax, where everything is cold and most of the stars are dead. The night skies are an expanse of blackness. Your world doesn't have words to describe these creatures which have adapted to a world without heat or light. To say their technology is eons beyond yours would be an understatement. They seek to surpass the 10th dimensional barrier, which no mortal creature is allowed to breach. They plan on ... devouring our universe, as fuel, to power their machines and steal the implement."
Daniel just stared in confusion, barely believing that this could be true, despite all he has seen. "These creatures, have been trying to target our universe for thousands of years... thankfully, because they are... erm... we are not in the same glob of wax... it is much harder for them to target us. That's where that comes in." Marvin paused pointing to the implement. "That reconfigures reality, changing the frequency of the entire universe, which in turn throws off all of the, lets just call them Creepies, throws off all the Creepies' calculations."
"What happens if we don't change things often enough or big enough?" Daniel dared to ask...
"Big enough usually isn't an issue, unless you are only targeting inanimate objects... that might make an issue. Sentient beings exist out to the 48th dimension so even making a small change, to a woman's breast size for example, will have a ripple effect throughout all the dimensions, not just the basic 3 you readily perceive. Now, if you don't change things often enough, that's a much bigger issue. You heard about the asteroid wiping out the dinosaurs right?"
Daniel nodded afraid of where this was going.
"The scribe of the time had fallen asleep several nights in a row and was creating new varieties of plants during the day. The Creepies had locked onto the universe and were able to compensate immediately for the changes he was making. Once he realized this he had to immediately take drastic action to lose them. Hence the asteroid. This is why the main focus of my transformations are people and I don't flinch when turning people into animals or vice versa, it beats obliterating this planet again."
Daniels head was swimming.
