The two gryphons spent the next few weeks searching again for the fairies through the forest. Over this time, their relationship began to grow from more than master and mount, to something deeper. They slept, curled up one against another, and John found his new gryphon instincts telling him strange new things.
He was stronger now, a powerful beast of a creature, no longer the human boy or adolescent. Bechana was a proper gryphon...a great mate, or at least his instincts told him. They made a great team tracking down their prey, both fairy and animal to eat.
Finally, one day, the two managed to corner Mara while she was tending to some flowers. Pouncing on the hapless fairy, John held her squirming body. "Ok Mara.....let's try this again! Ill let you go if you give Bechana one more wish."
Mara squirmed and screached but finally relented. "All right all right!"
She turned to the other Gryphon. "One wish, and one only!"
Bechana nodded and wished....
