Snorting out a deep breath through his nostrils, Trevor made up his mind and started walking over to where Rita and Jasper were standing. He felt his heart turn cold as soon as he captured Jasper’s first scent. Trevor’s horse side wanted to challenge the stallion for the mare, but he wasn’t ready to let his inner horse take the reins yet.
“Oh, hello again,” Rita called out happily as Trevor approached. Jasper watched on inquisitively, his ears perked up in attention. Trevor realized with some disappointment that he was definitely smaller than the other stallion. “All set to head in to get some tasty oats?”
“I guess so,” Trevor said less enthusiastically, his ears focusing on Jasper.
“Oh. I'm so sorry,” Rita said. “This is Jasper. He's been a friend of mine since I got here. And, Jasper, this is Trevor. I met him in the second paddock earlier. He just got here today.”
“Ah, yes,” Jasper said, flaring his nostrils a bit. Trevor caught a bit of an accent as Jasper spoke. He guessed it was due to Jasper being a natural horse. “He certainly smells new enough. How have you enjoyed being one of us?”
“It's been interesting,” Trevor said dryly. “So how do you two know each other?”
