Officer Ryan took Claire into his unit and then started to drive off towards the police station. They were silent as they drove off, but Claire couldn't help but notice the lack of the "K-9" in a K-9 unit.
"This town is weird," she muttered to herself.
After about 10 minutes, the car pulled up to the station, and Claire was escorted out of the car and into the station. She was led to the station and after some processing, was put into an interrogation room. Claire looked around at the blank walls and the metal table, and couldn't help but feel like she was in some sort of trouble here. Maybe she should have stayed out to take her chances with the wolf creatures.
The officers took all of Claire's things that she had on her, including her rifle, camera, and backpack. They found her wallet in her backpack, which then gave the officers her name, where she lived, and the fact that she was a student at the University of Oregon.
Samantha joined Officer Ryan and started to ask, "Okay, officer, what do you have for us?"
"Well, ma'am," Officer Ryan pulled out a clipboard that included Claire's information and driver's license, "I can tell you that her name is Claire Robertson, and she's a student from the University of Oregon. She was camping in the woods, illegally I might add, and armed with a rifle. She also had a camera, and you'll want to see some of the pictures that she's taken."
Officer Ryan handed Samantha Claire's camera, and Samantha started to scroll through the pictures. At first, it was quite innocent, with pictures of deer, birds, and squirrels. Apparently, Claire was quite the nature photographer. Samantha also noticed a picture of a couple of werefoxes, and the last picture had Eric and Cassie as werewolves kissing each other. This picture must have been taken before they were aware of Claire's presence. When Samantha saw this, she scowled a bit. This was looking more and more like a Statute 2B situation.
"Thank you officers," Samantha replied, as she took the camera and information, and went into the interrogation room. Samantha could see the young woman sitting on the other side of the table. One of her hands was twirling her short brown hair while her brown eyes darted around. Her other hand was drumming on the table, and it was quite clear that she was nervous.
"Claire Robertson, I take it?" Samantha started.
"Yes?" Claire responded.
"Samantha Twist. I'm the town chancellor." Samantha then took a seat across from Claire. "So, tell me why you're out here at this time of year. The park's closed."
"Well," Claire said, her mind working as she put both hands on the table, "I was out on school break, and I wanted to get some pictures of wildlife. While I know that the park's closed, but that's when there are the few people around to disturb the wildlife and get some nice pictures."
Samantha scowled at Claire and then said, "The park's closed for a reason. There are all sorts of wild animals out there who could have killed you. And this time of year, we could have had a blizzard, and no one would have found you till March at the earliest. You were lucky this time. And that rifle? Care to explain?"
"Well, ma'am," Claire started, "I do realize that there're dangerous animals out there, so my daddy taught me to be prepared for that. I wasn't about to become some bear's lunch."
Samantha thought for a moment, nodded, and then pulled out Claire's camera. She brought up the picture of Eric and Cassie. "Now, care to explain this?"
Claire's eyes widened and said, in a whisper, "The wolf creatures! I woke up when I heard this howl. I didn't have a chance to take some pictures of some wolves, and I thought that this was my chance. So I got dressed, grabbed my camera, and went out towards the lake. That's when I saw these two creatures," Claire pointed to the camera, "and I must have accidently hit the shutter button. They looked up at me, and I started to run back to my tent to get out of there. I've never seen anything like this. They look like wolves, but they were standing on two legs, and their hands looked human." Claire looked around and then pulled close to Samantha, "Listen, these things may be dangerous. I think you should contact the governor, the president, the national guard, someone!"
Samantha bowed her head to think for a moment, and then said, "Okay. For now, we're going to keep you here."
"What?" Claire responded in astonishment, "On what grounds?"
"Well, trespassing for a start, and threatening the life of an officer. For now, we'll keep you here until we decide what to do with you. This is for your own safety more than anything."
Claire didn't respond, but lowered her head to the table. It looked like she was about to cry. Samantha got up from the table and left the room. She approached Officer Ryan and told him, "We're going to hold her overnight. For now, she's under arrest for trespassing and illegal use of a firearm. But it looks like we might have a Statute 2B on our hands, and I'll need to confer with the mayor on this."
"Yes, ma'am." Officer Ryan responded, and then went into the interrogation room to get Claire. Samantha walked out of the station, and while doing so, sent a text message to Mayor Stovall, "WE HAVE A SITUATION. A NORMAL FOUND OUT. WILL DISCUSS IN THE MORNING." After sending the message, she put the phone away, got into her car, and started to drive home.
