**Side chapter
Later that evening…
“Moon Lake Police Department, Officer Connor* speaking. How may I be of service?” Connor said rather mechanically when he picked up the phone. He was on desk duty that night. A young, virile werewolf, and here he was spending his Saturday night working.
“Officer Connor, this is Evan Lawson.” Evan said in a soft voice. He was making his call downstairs in the kitchen so as not to disturb his wife or anyone else. Mike was snoring loudly on the couch.
“Oh, hello sir. Have a good holiday?” Connor asked. He didn’t know the family well. Only that over the past week, they’d been put through the wringer with the mess the Bower family caused.
“It was certainly eventful. But unfortunately I’m not calling for leisure. I need to report something.” Evan said grimly. He had a few hunches about the black sedan his father pointed out. Evan took a midnight stroll to investigate himself. When he got to the car, the man was back inside.
He told Officer Connor everything he saw, and everything Mike had seen earlier. The driver was male, in his early forties, with brown hair. A normal, and was armed. Evan hadn’t been able to make our the man’s face, he was too far away. Mike had warned Evan the guy had binoculars, so Evan didn’t want to risk him being spotted.
“…and you say this man was driving a black four door? Alright… license plate, SZB-B47V? Okay, got it. Thanks sir, I’ll call back if something develops.” Connor said, writing down all the information on a notepad.
Connor hung up the phone, and then immediately called the other officer on duty to the desk.
“I’m going to check this out. You man the phones.” Connor said before leaving. He sincerely hoped it was nothing. But in the pit of his stomach, Connor knew nothing good was going to come of the sighting.
He got into his car and drove to where Evan Lawson reported seeing the black sedan. Right near the entrance to the park (aka the woods that ran through the Lawson’s, Anderson’s, and Twist’s backyards). The car wasn’t there anymore, but there was a faint water stain on the ground from where it had been.
Connor bent down, shining a flashlight on the spot he guessed the car had been parked on. There were no discernible tire marks, nor any scents that might have indicated who this person was, or what they wanted.
“Excuse me, officer!” Connor rose, turning around to see a wereraccoon approaching him in were form.
“Yes ma’am?”
“Are you here about that car?” she asked.
“You saw it?” Connor took out his notepad, and prepared take notes.
“Yes. I woulda called it in myself but I didn’t think you’d have come out just for some weirdo and his black sedan. Boy was that man strange. According to the neighbors, guy spent most of his time in the woods. Had a lot of fancy equipment too. Couldn’t tell you what it was. I’m not very tech-savy myself.” The wereraccoon said.
“Could you describe the man you saw?”
“Well he was normal. Probably about as tall as you. Brown hair, white, had a hard look on his face. Kept looking over his shoulder like he was ‘fraid someone was going to jump him any second.”
“Anything else?”
“Mmm, oh heard him asking questions about the town. Some other normals, but they live here, went up to him and asked if he was having car trouble. That was my first thought too. But he said no, and then went on and on about this place being weird.”
“Was there anything in particular that worried you? Aside from the fact this guy was parked across the street from your house for hours.”
“Well I thought he mighta had a sidearm on his belt. But it might have been something else. Eyes aren’t what they used to be.”
“Alright. Thank you. If you or any of your neighbors can remember anything else, please give us a call.” Connor said, tipping his hat to the raccoon-lady before getting back into his cruiser.
“Strange man, strange car, strange case. But I guess this can all wait until tomorrow. Can’t do anything without the guy here. Just have to wait and see” Connor thought, starting the car’s engine.
