Nate walked around picking up small branches to use as kindling and chuckling to himself. His plan was working perfectly. He'd spend his time collecting firewood and kindling while Alex worked on the insurmountable riddle that was putting together that tent. He returned to the campsite and to his surprise found Alex was gone. The tent was all set up and ready to go and their bags and sleeping bags were already in the tent.
Nate dropped the kindling by the other wood and decided he'd get the fire going while Alex was gone and surprise him. He pulled out a bit of newspaper he stashed in with the camping supplies and balled up a couple pieces of paper. He placed some smaller sticks on top and then some bigger ones on top of that, forming a crude teepee formation. He then proceeded to light the paper and watched as the sticks catch fire, progressively adding bigger and bigger sticks and then finally a few smaller logs. It was burning steady when Alex returned with another armload of logs and was surprised to see a full fire going and Nate relaxing in a camp chair, soda in hand.
"Wha..." started Alex, stunned that his boyfriend got such a lovely fire going for someone who seemed clueless.
"Yeah, so it turns out I'm a bit of a pyro. You just assumed I had no idea what I was doing and I played along because...well, because I didn't want to help you set up the tent," said Nate, with a devilish smirk on his face.
"You rat." Alex dropped the logs by the others and walked over to Nate, playfully hitting him before leaning over and giving him a kiss on the lips. Nate couldn't help but smile. This was going to be a wonderful experience for the two of them to spend some quality time together and get to know each other better.
"Any other confessions?" asked Alex.
"I'm actually a reasonably good cook. Not as good as you, of course. My speciality is more baking, such as cookies, cakes, pies..." replied Nate.
"Huh, well I'll be...you've been holding out on me." Alex walked over to the supplies on the picnic table. "How are you are s'mores?"
"S'mores?" asked Nate, looking confused.
Alex let out a deep sigh. "You're killing me Smalls!"
Nate let out a laugh and walked over to the table. "Relax Alex. I've been to enough backyard barbecues to know what a S'more is. I may not come from a super outdoorsy family, but I'm not completely ignorant either. Besides, it's so much fun to mess with you."
"Yeah, yeah." Alex handed him the box of graham crackers and marshmallows while he picked up the chocolate bars and roasting sticks. "For that, I'm going to be in charge of the chocolate then."
"No fair," whispered Nate as they both walked back over to the campfire.
