"But these imps..." Bella began to wonder, actually clutching Sammy and Jessy to her.
Bella had always been a responsible woman, with regard to her job, her family, and her magic. The spider, Charlotte's, explanation on the need for baby furs made some sense if these inter-dimensional imps really were a threat, but something in this didn't sit right with her. The baby furs were children, toddlers. They might live out their lives in a way similar to how they had lived as humans, but they had still become children. She couldn't let them be harmed.
Sammy and Jessy, meanwhile, felt a bit confused and intrigued by everything as well. Sammy never thought that they would ever be shield or fence against bad things. At the same time, Bella's grip on him felt very much like a protective grandmother who didn't want to see anyone harmed. In a way, it felt almost as though Bella was his grandma too.
"Fate couldn't truly intend to put children in the line of fire?" Bella asked to Charlotte.
"White witches and warlocks like you have tried to stop the Innocent Malice," Charlotte said slowly, "and while they did better than those who would argue more in favor of science over magic... they did ultimately fail. These imps represent almost pure darkness."
Bella watched Charlotte pointed to Sammy and Jessy with one leg. Sammy and Jessy watched as well.
"The fence must be as purely good and innocent as they are," Charlotte spoke, "as that will be something that the Innocent Malice simply cannot counter or break through once the fence is completed."
"What about the ones you say might have already sneaked in?" Sammy asked.
"I won't let them hurt you," Bella promised, "I won't let them hurt ANY of you."
"But Charlotte said we're supposed to protect you," Jessy commented.
Bella managed a bit of a chuckle at that, and still held Jessy and Sammy to her, "than maybe we'll protect each other."
"If I may..." Charlotte spoke from where she was sitting in her web, "there are ideas keep your granddaughter safe and protect the baby furs that are here from the imps."
They all looked to the white garden spider in her web. They couldn't tell on what Charlotte felt, as she looked just like any other spider. As a "servant of necessity" that was how Charlotte was supposed to look. In many ways, Charlotte liked Bella. The woman had been devoted to her family and would do anything to protect them. In a way, it did hurt Charlotte to see Bella become so sad over Sally's transformation into the first fur, and wished there might have been a way to keep Bella happy, but necessity wasn't something that was easy. The imps and the being of chaos that they served would consume everything good in this world. Sally's growing powers with each new baby fur would serve to protect this world and others. It was the only way to contain the Innocent Malice to where it already was.
"The baby furs are all based on normal animals of varying types," Charlotte explained, "Mostly mammals and mostly land based mammals. There are some that are birds and some that are reptiles... but most of them are mammals. They'll provide the actual fence, and once complete... the imps will be no threat to this world, provided you can keep your cheer, Bella."
"But what about those that are already here?" Bella asked.
"The means there would be with more mythical baby furs," spoke Charlotte, "like any other baby fur, they'd be toddlers... but based off more mythical animals. Dragons... mermaids... fairies... and so on."
"Would they be able to do magic?" Sammy asked.
"Some could," Charlotte used her legs to make it look as though she was nodding, "so to better protect Sally and control any imp that might have made it to this world."
"Ohhhhh!" Sammy and Jessy both chorused in curiosity.
"But they would need someone to teach them," Charlotte said calmly and softly, "for while much of their abilities will come naturally, as they do for any baby fur... some things will be a little more complex than that."
"I can help," Bella offered, "at least until my time comes."
"It was hoped that you would," Charlotte assured, "because you do love Sally and Sally loves you... even without the spell's effects."
"I know..." Bella answered.
