Blood was covering the path, and you feel something wet on your palm. You yelp when you see you have a gash on your hand. You must have accidentally scraped your hand on one of the wolf-thing's fang-teeth as you bent over it. Eew, some of it's thick saliva got into the wound. Grabbing a clump of dead leaves, you wipe it off. Your scramble to your feet, feeling faint at the monstrosity you just saw. The wind picks up again, and you take a step backwards. You whip your head around to look at the tangle of dark trees from earlier. Darkness there, and nothing more. You turn and start running away from this dark place in the woods. You jump over a stream and run through some tangles of trees when something ahead of you makes you stop dead in your tracks.
About fifty feet ahead of you, a dark shape is crouched over something, head bending down and coming back up occasionally. Your stomach lurches when you realize it's eating something. Clapping a hand over your mouth, your take a step back. You hear a loud snapping noise and you turn around in horror and realize you've stepped on a dead branch. The dark thing whips it's head up to look at you with gleaming yellow eyes. It gets to it's feet (it's nearly nine feet tall!) and you see blood dripping down it's muzzle, splattering onto the dead leaves below it. You two stand in silence, in the middle of this dark wood, for about ten seconds. You hear another snap behind you. And one to your left. And one to your right. You're surrounded.
Silence hangs in the darkness for one moment more.
And that's when the howling begins.
