You're about to enter the church when you hear a shuffling noise coming from behind the church. The misty fog, the overgrown tangle of trees, and the eerie silence get to you. "Hello?" you say loudly, trying to sound fearless but instead sounding very scared. You get no response. "C'mon, I know you're there..." you call out. The shuffling continues, and you wonder if you should check it out. After all, it could be just a deer or a fox.
You turn around the right corner of the front of the church, glancing at the mossy stone walls and broken windows that adorn this side. Right when you're about to turn the corner, the shuffling stops and you hear a rusting sound steadily growing fainter. Gulping, you leap around the corner and see an overgrown path you never noticed before straight ahead, to the left of the left corner of the church. It's clogged with long branches from the tall, overgrown shrubs that grow on either side of the path. And, about 500 feet away, you see a dark figure (from this distance, you can't tell if it's on two or four legs, or what size it is) running through the branches, getting farther and farther away.
"Hey!" you yell. Taking out your switchblade just in case, you run straight into the thicket of thick branches, chasing after something you have no ide what it is. You thrash your way through the particularly heavy parts, ripping your jacket in a few places and getting cuts on your ankles and thighs from sticker bushes. The shape seems to be getting closer as you chase it further and further away from the church.
After a while, you notice that that you can't see the figure anymore. You start to slowly stop running until you're just jogging. Then you stop and put your hands to your knees, gasping from breath. How long and how far you ran you don't know, but looking up you realize you've stumbled upon a small clearing. The dark shape is nowhere in sight.
You see something lying on the dewy grass just ahead of you. The fog is so thick here, you could cut it with a knife. Groping your way forward, you bend down and your hand hits something hard. Picking it up, you bring it close to your eyes so you can see it. It's an old watch, copper used to make it green and flaky, meaning it's many, many years old. How did a watch like this get out to the middle of the woods.
Suddenly, a feeling of panic hits you like a brick. You have no idea where you are, let alone if the dark shape you saw was real or just a figment of your imagination. You stuff the watch in your pocket and turn to go back the way you came, but are shocked to see that the bushes you just ran through have grown and twisted into a huge briar patch, unpassable unless you want to loose several pints of blood trying to get through. You shake your head in disbelief and notice the fog has grown thicker.
Then, about twenty feet away, you see a dark shape coming towards you in the thick fog. You squint your eyes, trying to discern what is walking towards you, but you can't seem to make it out. Still, you feel very uneasy and take a step back. The dark shape retaliates by milking quicker. You feel menaced by the shape and turn to run.
You run across rhea clearing but have to stop dead in your tracks at the briar patch. You spin around see the figure has been sprinting after you. Pulling out your switchblade and holding it in front of you, you wait for the arrival of the figure. Half a minute later, the figure gets close enough to you that you can discern what it is...
