The package had arrived at the perfect time. Sean's roommate would be gone drinking himself under the table at some girls house all weekend, so he had the room to himself. Anxious to try out the new headset, Sean tore through the packaging. There, nestled among the packing peanuts, was the newest marvel in gaming.
The helmet was sleek and black, covering the entire head. A long cord hung from the back like an obsidian tentacle. Sean donned the helmet, shrouding himself in darkness as he tried to line the cord up with his spine. He shivered as he felt dozens of small wires and clamps attaching themselves to his back. After finding a comfortable place to lie down, Sean reached up and activated the helmet, filling his vision with color.
Sean found himself in a white room with scores of menus around him. To the outside world, he would appear to be lying motioless on his bed, but the helmet interacted directly with the user's nervous system, allowing Sean to experience virtual reality without knocking over his furniture. A computerized voice began to speak to Sean from the white void.
