As John the chauffeur drove Frieda Knight to school, his charge sat in the back seat, alone.
Grounded for two months isn't that bad. What worries me is what dad might do after the two months and Julie Stovall's trial are over, especially if he finds out I'm the one who ratted him out to the Skulk about his attempted takeover of Tachibana Enterprises.
"I know you are not having a good time dealing with your parents at the moment Miss Frieda, but is there anything I can do to help?" asked John, actually caring about his employers' child, since she was a lot nicer to the household staff than her parents.
"I wish..." said Frieda, while slumping against the back seat. "Jeffery informed me of everyone's intended stand of solidarity if the worst happens, but I hope he's been able to pass along my thanks and word of caution to wait and see what actually happens first."
"He has, at least to me. I'm sorry I couldn't come up with something more convenient to tell your father about where you've been and who've you been with."
"I'm not mad at you. Just them. Do you know, when she went to give me my werepanthress birth control pill this morning, mother actually asked me if I was sure I was bi?"
"Really? I'll admit I was a bit flabbergasted when our youngest son came out to my wife and I and said he was gay, but as long as he's happy and not hurting either himself or anyone else..." said John as he drove.
"That's how I feel too, but Mother's afraid I'll fall in love with some woman and ruin all their plans for a prestigious marriage and grandchildren someday," replied Frieda. Which isn't out of the realm of possibilities, as she thought about Spencer Lawson. There's just something about that girl...
"So, if I can ask, what did you tell her?"
"Without naming any of the women I've been with, what I could of the truth. That the boy werepanther of high social standing they arranged to help me enter were society this past summer had other ideas about how grateful I should be to him than what I was willing to do, and that who I was with and when I was with them was totally of my own free will."
"So they don't know about..." began John, since he helped Frieda keep a few of the summer dates she had with the older lady who rescued her from the jerk in question.
"No, and I'd like to keep it that way," requested Frieda.
"I shall do my best," promised John.
"Besides, other than you folks around the house, and now Eric and Spencer, I have no one else in my life. My parents have absolutely no idea how lonely it can be growing up as a Knight, let alone their daughter."
Between last night and this morning, Frieda had given serious thought to faking taking her birth control pill and getting pregnant just to spite her parents.
Yet in the end calmer, more rational thoughts prevailed.
I'm only 14, way too young to have a child. Then again, if the pregnancy wasn't with their approval and benefit, my parents would drag me to the nearest abortionist to hide "the family shame"; even if it had to be done out of the country. Besides, right now there's only one man who's baby I would ever even think of having if I could, but I have absolutely no idea how Eric and Spencer would react to that.
"Coming up on Moon Lake High School," announced John, before making the final turn into the parking lot.
As usual, Frieda thanked John for the ride, then said, "I never got a chance to thank Ethel for the delicious breakfast this morning."
"I'll be sure to tell her when I can," promised John the chauffeur.
As Frieda prepared to leave the Knight family town car, her mood improved dramatically as she saw Eric Anderson and Spencer Lawson standing by the riders' entrance to the school waiting for her.
