You grow up for times to come on the farm where you were born that day, among a multitude of roosters and chickens, until you are finally fully grown. As of late you have been noticing though, that your feathers are the bright white of a chicken and not the colorful plumes of a rooster, while you had always been certain you were male. You had still been hoping that you were just a bit colorless until...
As you sit in your nest as usual, you feel something brewing in your lower abdomen. It quickly intensifies and within moments you are squirming painfully as something is trying to push itself out of your body...after a while it is done, and you look at what just came out of you. A large, oval white chicken egg. Yep, this concludes it - your egg-laying ability definitely means you're female.
But that's not the worst of your worries. Having the ability to lay eggs means you're going to have to do something that you've seen other chickens do, and that you would dread to do yourself: hatching and feeding, as soon as one of your eggs gets fertilized.
