Not knowing how the rings worked, Luke decided to follow instructions. He hid the gold ring at first because it would be easier to get his friends to wear theirs if they didn't know his was different.
Max was the first to put on a silver ring but that was no surprise. Max wore rings anyway so what was one more. Jack and Tom were reluctant so you had to sell the idea that all four of you would wear them as friendship rings. This meant you had to wear a silver ring but you noticed nothing different about Max yet so maybe it was safe. Either the rings didn't do anything or would only do things when someone wore the gold one. You slipped a silver ring on and didn't notice any difference. You felt relief and your risk worked. Tom put his ring on. You managed to slip the ring off and hide your naked finger while the guys were distracted.
Now to get Jack to wear his. Jack said, "I don't wear rings." But now, Max and Tom were on your side putting peer pressure on Jack. "Are you one of us or not?" Finally Jack agreed to wear his ring but if he went anywhere without one of his roommates, he would take the ring off. "These aren't like wedding rings you know."
You had to wait for a more golden opportunity to try on the gold ring without anyone noticing.
