You and your fiancée Roslyn wake up this morning, looking out through the partly-curtained windows at the sun rising over the mountains in the distance. Roslyn smiled, turned over in bed, and kissed you. You kiss her passionately back and she smiles. "It's a beautiful morning." She says, sitting up in bed. "C'mon." She gets up and walks over to the closet and begins taking off her pajamas. "Let's go on a walk." You nod eagerly and get up, heading into the bathroom to take a shower before you go.

Ten minutes later, you and Roslyn are heading out of your shared apartment's bedroom towards the front door. You're about to open it quietly and slip out when a thick, nasally voice speaks up from the living room couch. "Where are you guys going?" it mumbles. You almost groan when you realize your best friend Matt knocked on your apartment door at 11:30 last night, drunk off his head and needing a place to crash. He's wearing a rumpled tanish-yellow jacket, white shirt, and jeans."Uh... me an Roz are going out on a walk." You answer, hoping to discourage him from wanting to come. "Uh..." he moans, putting a hand to his forehead. Your hand is on the doorknob when he speaks up again. "Hey, lemme come with you..." he mumbles, sitting up and rubbing his eyes. "Maybe all that fresh air'll get rid of my headache."

Twenty minutes later, you're pulling into the parking lot of the nature trail that's just a few miles down the road from you and Roslyn's apartment. You park the car on the loose stones and step out, slamming the door behind you, a sound that echoes through the trees. Roslyn, in her baseball hat and short-sleeved shirt, takes your hand as you start down the trail. Matt follows close behind, arms folded across his chest and grumbling something about hangover cures.

There isn't a cloud in the sky. It's blue all around, with the sun hanging in the trees just enough for it to be comfortably warm, but not enough for it to be straight overhead and unbearably hot. The pebbled dirt trail winds through the cedar and aspen trees. Birds chirp, squirrels chatter, and the leaves sway gently in the light breeze. Roslyn grips your hand tighter and puts her head on your shoulder. All of these peaceful sights are disturbed by Matt's moans and groans from behind you of his head hurting and the sun being too bright.

Suddenly, you hear a loud chirp. Looking up, you see a magnificent bird sitting on a branch nearby. It's plumage is a crystal blue with white tips. It cocks it's head as you, Matt, and Roslyn stop to observe it. Suddenly, it flaps it's wings and takes off, flying directly overhead your group, into the trees. But as it goes one of it's blue feathers flutters down and lands on Matt's shoulder. He brushes it off absentmindedly as the three of you continue to walk, but only you notice that the feather left a blue residue on Matt's shirt, which seems to evaporate. Shaking your head, you concentrate on holding Roslyn's hand as you continue to walk.

The trail winds around a bend, passes over a small bridge, and up a slight hill until you three find yourself walking down an avenue of bright purple jacaranda trees. Strangely, the birds have gone silent and the only thing you can hear are the leaves in the wind. Suddenly, a loud thump comes from behind you and Roslyn. Turning, you see Matt has collapsed, face up, on the dusty trail. He's making strange gurgling noises. "Oh shit." you mutter, running up and bending down on Matt's left side as Roslyn bends on his right. "He knows he shouldn't drink that much, he's always like this after a night out..." Roslyn says sympathetically, putting a hand on Matt's sweat-covered forehead.

Suddenly, without warning, Matt's brown eyes glaze over and turn a deep crystal blue, the same color as the bird's plumage. He sits up suddenly as Roslyn screams. He jumps to his feet and wrestles out of your grip. He runs, jumping the trail barrier, and continues running through the forest. "MATT! WAIT!" you cry, you and Roslyn rushing after him. You both jump the fence and beat branches and sticks aside as you run.

You burst out onto a clearing a few minutes later to watch as Matt falls to his knees in front of a large hole about hallway across the clearing. He then pitches forward, falling, as he disappears from view. "NO!" you cry, rushing forward. You run across the clearing and stop just inches from the hole, looking down. Only blackness greets you. You don't have time to mourn, however, as Roslyn accidentally runs into you. With a grunt, you pitch forward into the hole. Roslyn reaches out to grab your wrist, and succeeds, but the momentum makes her fall into the hole as well.

You scream as you fall through the inky blackness for a few seconds. Then you suddenly find yourself falling through some kind of bright blue light, shrouded in swirling and dancing mist. You hear Roslyn's screams coming from above you. After about two minutes, you hit something soft, hard. You remain face down, panting, for a few seconds as Roslyn hits the ground to the side of you.

Groaning, you get up and realize you've landed on some thick red carpet. Looking up, you see that you're in a large elevator car, which is covered walls-to-ceiling with buttons. Matt is propped up in the corner of the elevator, apparently unconscious. You're about to run over to him when you notice a plaque on the closed doors. it reads:

"Congratulations on finding the Elevator of the Universe! You now have unlimited access to all the dimensions and alternate realities in existence! Before returning to your home universe, you must visit at least five other ones. But when you arrive, you will immediately be transformed into something appropriate in that universe. Stay for at least a few hours and move onto the next one. Once you have completed all that, you may return to your home universe!"

In your disbelief and shock, you back up against one of the walls. You hear a click and are pitched to the floor as the elevator begins travelling very fast in many different directions. It goes up, down, left, right, diagonally, and even doubles back a few times. Roslyn screams from somewhere behind you as you are pitched to the floor. Suddenly, everything is still and you hear a thump and a wheeze as the doors open. Looking up groggily, you see...
