Neither life is yours. Being 14 is at least old enough to be independent, but you don't really like Jared's face so much. Seven is awfully little, but if you can remember some of your school, it would be easy to go back through the... You blink and stare as Jared's clothes suddenly shimmer and change into smaller, brighter kid's clothes, then look up to see a woman smiling down at you from the open door. You waited too long!
"You are such a mess! Let me get you sorted out." She tugs and straightens everything, pulling your pants open and tucking in the shirt, then gets you buckled and tied. Having her dressing you should be embarrassing, but it just feels normal. "There!" She turns you around so you can both see your reflection. You look like a picture of the perfect Tiger Scout, the new uniform crisp and clean and the little boy wearing it like some movie character. "You look very handsome!"
Your gap-toothed grin shows up again, and you feel excited about being a Cub Scout. So much is new for you this year - school, T-ball, and now... You frown, realizing that your hopes of keeping some of your schooling are not going to be realized. While you remember being older, both as jared and your original self, what comes to mind when you try thinking about who you really are is Donald "Donnie" Michael O'Connor. A first grader who just turned seven, is a good hitter at T-ball, sometimes wets the bed, and is struggling with reading.
Your mother doesn't notice your sudden frown, already turning to gather your street clothes. "Come on, then. You can wear the uniform home. She takes your hand and leads you back intot he main store. "Is there anything else you want? I have all the items they had on the list."
