Matt, giddy with his new powers and the impact they will have on his life, slammed out through his back door and hopped the fence into the DeMarcos' yard. Brett's pile of clothes was right where he saw it last, and he scooped them up and, making sure the small boy was not trapped inside, wadded them into a ball that he tucked under his arm. He didn't want to leave any evidence.
Brett watched all of this from below with alarm. On the one hand, here was someone who could potentially help him, but why was his wimpy neighbor acting so suspiciously, almost as if he had known what had happened to Brett?
Matt scanned the ground in widening arcs, and Brett realized that he was about to be spotted. There was no place to go, so he just made a run for it. Maybe if he jumped down into one of the window wells, he could find a way into the house, where someone in his family would surely find and help him.
Matt saw the dashing small figure immediately and started in pursuit. Could Brett make it to the window well in time? And, if so, would that afford any protection whatever?
