A Game of Change

Demons, Legends and Mythologies

added by TheWolfeWriter13 8 years ago O

Logan Wolfenhaus entered the store, hearing the bell ding above him with the old man inside acknowledging his presence, and walked toward the counter with curiosity on his mind. Logan, during his ritualistic pack-up at work, had seen an advertisement for an expansion to a "draw card" based game and figured it would be something to play with his son Damien... the sixteen year old whom he had raised as a single father since the day that woman left him and his son behind. Logan couldn't help the fact that he was truly gay and had denied it all that time, thinking that he could play straight, but the more and more he did... the more it ate away at him and Logan couldn't stand it. Even before Damien was born, he told Lucy and she was appalled by the very notion she was with a gay man. Lucy played normal, however, until Damien was born and then she signed over custody, left the papers on the table and left with her belongings, assumingly never looking back to the home and family she was leaving behind. Logan and Damien had a special bond, a tight connection between the two, especially once Damien came out to his father... knowing that the risk of doing so was far less than holding it in and letting it eat away at him... all things considered. Logan always wanted to do things with his son to make their relationship strong so that Damien could feel like his dad was also a friend that he could trust with anything and everything. Since it was also the end of the week, it was game night for the two and Logan knew that this new card game could be just the thing to spice up an otherwise humdrum night between the two of them... considering they both exhausted everything they had for "game night". If it hadn't been for the strange, seemingly out of place pop-up that appeared on his laptop computer just before going to shut it down till he got home. The advertisement was for an expansion called "Demons, Legends and Mythologies" for a larger game simply called "The Game". Thing was, both Logan and Damien had a thing for two of the three subjects, which he definitely couldn't pass up.

"Hello there... is there anything I can help you with?" The old man asked in his miserly voice that sounded like a lot like Deckard Caine from Diablo 3.

"Um... yes... I suppose it'd be best to ask than try and hunt it down myself." Logan said grinning, rubbing the back of his head as he walked closer. "Do you happen to have the latest expansion for 'The Game'... the one called 'Demons, Legends and Mythologies'? Better yet... is it possible to exclude the 'Legends' bit of it?" Logan asked feeling as excited as a youthful kid in elementary.

"Oh... that game and expansion eh? Well... you're in a bit of luck! The expansion comes in three packs that are sold together, so if you don't mind paying for all three... I can just give you the two! Also... do you have or need the full game to go with it?" He said smiling from ear to ear, which didn't look quite human to begin with.

"Sure... I can pay full price. Hell! It would save me a lot of time to not have to deal with the 'Legends' bit of it. So... it is well worth the extra money!" Logan said with new fervor and excitement. "As for the full game... I don't have it, but I read online you don't need it to play this one because there are certain cards that are duplicates. That's correct... isn't it?"

"Oh my... yes. The expansion comes with everything you need, including dice to roll to pick each card... though... you don't need to play with the dice either. As the instructions will tell you, when you and whomever else begins playing, each of you just need to say 'I accept the will of the cards and embrace whatever may come'. Simple as that." The old man chided. "So... that will be 29.99 US!"

Logan nodded and smiled as he handed over the cash, even tipping the older man for his help and immediately headed home with the box, the two decks of cards and the dice. Little did Logan know that playing without the dice, if he chose to, came with a very different set of results. Instead of the cards being random for each player who picked them, each card changed to fit the next step in what the two would eventually become playing with just those two decks. With "Legends" in there... it balanced out the evil in the demonic side... without it though... they would both become hellish beasts... with subtle differences because of who they were as individuals.
