Fortunately for James the owner did take care of him. He was immediately placed into a more spacious tank with plenty of water to keep himself moist and some nice greenery to rest in. He was fed well too. At first the owner was surprised that such a healthy looking toad was refusing his food, but before too long James got used to the idea of eating crickets, flies and various other bugs. It just began to feel normal after a while.
James began to wonder if he would ever leave his temporary home on a shelf in the store. He was under no illusions, people coming to buy pets were looking for a cute kitten or rabbit, not a warty toad like him. That suited James fine though, he was at least treated well and he continually hoped that Kayla would come back for him with the ability to reverse her spell.
One morning the owner got off the phone and came and stood in front of James' tank to talk to him. James thought it was weird how much this guy talked to the animals in his store, but it was kind of convenient for him so he was grateful nonetheless.
"You have a new owner" the pet shop manager smiled "someone was very keen to buy a toad from me and luckily I have you. I was beginning to wonder if I would ever sell you to be honest. You're kind of a niche pet!"
