I did not want Patrick to think I was scared. "Come on, let's go up." But Shane shook his head. "No way, man! I'm staying right here. And if I hear you guys screaming I'm running outside first can calling the cops second!"
"Well, I'm not a pussy." I started up the stairs, wincing as the boards creaked. It was pitch dark upstairs, and I switched on my flashlight. Where was Patrick? Shouldn't I be seeing at least some light from his flashlight? I looked back at Shane as I got near the top, and saw his eyes go wide. "Jason! You're fading out like Patrick did!"
I checked myself - solid flesh and blood. Was there some dust or something that made it look like I was ghosting? "I feel OK. Maybe it's another illusion." I kept going, but just before I got to the top I looked down. This time it was my turn to gasp. Shane was gone! "Dude! Where did you go?"
"I'm still here." Shane's voice came from the same general area, but there was nothing visible.
