He didn't actually recognize the giant man on a personal, first-name basis, but he remembered that the man came around once a month to spray for pests and set out traps to keep nuisance bugs under control. He wore a gray uniform with a red baseball cap. Over the brim of the cap the words "Bug-Busters" emblazoned to advertise the man's employer's business.
Jeff would have been indifferent to the man on a regular occasion, but there was nothing regular about finding himself transformed into a butterfly thanks to his botching his impulsive experiment with his newly-deliver Chronivac. Jeff figured he should get inside the house, make his way to his room and gain access to his computer without additional delay. He figured he was a butterfly, not a pest, so he wasn't one of the giant man's targets. Probably.
He flew toward the mail slot in the front door, but his plan came to a screeching halt when he witnessed the giant man lift a heavy tank onto his shoulder. With his enormous stride, the man was able to take two steps and get to the door ahead of Jeff. The man lifted a spray nozzle and in an instant doused the brass mail slot with a dripping residue of insecticide.
"No," Jeff wanted to scream in frustration. "Damn! What have you done?"
He considered taking his chances, but the space through which he would need to squeeze his butterfly body was very narrow. As he floated in the air close to the door, he saw the toxic spray dripping off the shiny metal of the mail slot. He wondered if butterflies might be immune to the spray, but he didn't really want to risk it. He'd have to find another way into his house.
