" It's my girlfriend," the merman says.
You feel your face heat up as soon as he says that. You were hitting on him and he had a girlfriend. " Oh, okay then, I'll be quiet so you can answer it," you say while scratching the back of your neck.
"Nah, it's probably nothing important. She's probably just calling about how she broke a nail again." He hits the call button and puts the phone up to his ear. "Hello?"
" WHERE ARE YOU?" you hear the girl on the other end of the phone screech.
" Uh, I'm just sitting at home."
"NO YOU'RE NOT! I WAS JUST THERE AND YOUR MOM SAID YOU WEREN'T THERE AND THAT SHE DIDN'T KNOW WHERE YOU RAN OFF TO!"
" Hey, chill, Naomi. It's no big deal."
You hear his girlfriend scoff in anger.
" ARE YOU SERIOUS? 'IT'S NO BIG DEAL'!? IT IS SO A BIG DEAL. AND THAT BIG DEAL' IS THAT TONIGHT IS PROM NIGHT, AND MY DATE IS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND. NOW WHERE ARE YOU?
" I thought you said that I was nowhere," the merman says. You can't help but giggle at his smart ass remark.
" ADRIAN, I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR YOUR BULL CRAP! TELL ME WHERE YOU ARE AND WHY YOU DITCHED ME!"
You see his eyes move around as he tries to think up an excuse. Obviously he couldn't just tell her he transformed into a merman. From the conversation you're hearing, she sounds like a bitch.
" THERE'S ANOTHER GIRL ISN'T THERE?" she asks.
He doesn't respond. Instead he just turns to look at you. You smile nervously and wave. What else could you do? Go underwater and pretend you're not there?
" JUST AS I THOUGHT. YOU'RE CHEATING ON ME WITH ANOTHER GIRL."
" No, Naomi, it's not like that!"
" WELL IF YOU WANT TO DO THAT TO ME, I CAN DO THAT TO YOU. I'VE BEEN CHEATING ON YOU TOO. AND ITS WITH TYRONE.
You quietly gasp and cover your mouth in shock. You look over at Adrian (finally you got his name).His mouth is gaped open with shock as well.
YOU KNOW, THE ONE THAT'S LIKE YOUR WORST ENMEY. I CAN SEE WHY, THOUGH. HE'S BETTER THAN YOU AT LKKE EVERYTHING. ESPECIALLY LOOKS. SO HOT. ANYWAYS WHERE DONE. I'M BREAKING UP WITH YOU! SEE YA LOSER!" Then she hangs up.
There is an awkward silence with only the sound of Adrian's heaving breathing that gets faster and faster, which makes you start to worry.
" Adrian?" You ask as you put a hand on his shoulder. As soon as you touch him, the heavy breathing stops. Then there are sobs. " Oh, Adrian." You become sad and feel sorry for him. You've been through breaks ups and know how bad it feels to have your heart broke.
" This is all my fault." He starts to hit himself in the forehead with his fist. " How could I have been so careless and selfish and stupid!"
" Hey, don't say that. Please." You sit on the edge of the pool next to him and begin wiping tears from his eyes.
" But it is my fault. If I had remembered that tonight was prom, she wouldn't be cheating on me."
" What could you have done. You're a merman. You can't exactly break it down on the dance floor with a giant fin for legs."
" That's not the point. I should've have remembered. I should've been the one to dance with her. To see her sparkle in a beautiful prom dress. I'm just a horrible person."
" No you're not. I've only hung out with you for the past two days and I can tell that you're a sweet, caring, compassionate, and wondedful, lovable person that everyone wants to be around." You blush as you say that last part. " And if that Naomi girl can't see that then she's like not worth it," you say in your best Naomi impression, sending a small smile to Adrian's face. " I've only heard her once and she already sounds so self centered.
He doesn't speak right away. Instead, he quickly wraps you into a hug, making you feel warm. His heart is beating really fast, causing yours to do the same. " You're right, I do deserve someone better." He looks you straight in your chocolate brown eyes. " And you deserve some who's pretty great too."
