A Game of Change

Welcome to Sin Desert

"I am so fired," Sara said as she woke up to find herself and the teenagers under her care in an actual desert outpost.

"Oh don't worry. If you blame me, dad'll forget you were even involved," Dixie said in a tone that was far too chipper.

"I just got used to one climate. I hate the heat. Don't do this to me," Natasha said to the sky.

"I don't think he's answering right now," Bart said, patting Natasha on the head, which earned him a dirty look.

"All in favor of blaming Johnny say aye," Chad said as he rushed away from the group and into a patch of shade.

"Wait, what? I didn't... Natasha said the Latin thing!" Johnny said, pointing at Natasha.

"We should get to the shade with Chad. It's cooler and we don't want to lose him," Kiki whispered to Sara.

"Right." Sara murmured back, "Alright everybody, let's follow Chad into the shade, and we can figure things out there."

"What's to figure out? Nat said a crazy latin thing from a crazy game about monsters and magic that promised a wish at the end," Dixie pointed out.

"You think the game did this? How?" Johnny asked as everyone else ran off to the shade.

"Oh simple, naive Johnny." Dixie said, patting Johnny on the shoulder as she walked past him to join the others, "Your mom got scammed. Or she scammed us. One of the two, but probably the first."

"Wait," Johnny said, grabbing Dixie's arm, "you don't think this is my mom's fault?"

"Why would she do this to her own kid?" Dixie asked before shaking him off and joining the others.

"Alright, so if we're in a card game, do we have cards?" Bart asked. Just then, his six cards appeared in his hand.

"Okay, who here has watched Jumanji?" Kiki asked as she also caused her hand of cards to appear.

"I still don't think this was because of a board game. It just doesn't make sense," Sara said.

"Well, if it is because of the game, we probably have to beat it to get out," Chad said.

"Classic anime plotline number fourteen. Makes sense," Bart said.

"But that's satanic!" Sara gasped.

"Are you for real? We're in a desert that we're pretty sure has literal monsters and demons and stuff in it and you're freaked out because a kid watches anime?" Kiki asked, using every fiber of her being to not facepalm.

"So guys, question." Dixie said, inserting herself into the exact middle of everyone else, "How do we find the bad guy and fight him?"

"The box said there was a dungeon. If we find something that would have a dungeon, that must be where the leader is," Johnny said.

"I guess we just start walking until we find a castle then?" Chad asked, clearly intending for it to be sarcastic. When no one raised any other options, he realized that was actually the plan, "Wait, do any of us even know what the thing we're looking for looks like? Or what direction to walk in?"

"Well, the desert is that way," Natasha said, pointing to the empty sand, "and it isn't in literally any other direction, so I think we can safely say that's the start."

"Oh we are so screwed," Chad said.

"Language!" Sara chided.

"Screw you!" Chad fired back.
