Just then there was another knock at the door, and it opened.
"Oh, Damon, I forgot to tell you that I've just baked some gingerbread, if you'd like to stop in for a bite," the landlord said.
Damon looked at the landlord, he seemed heavier than he usually did.
"Okay?" Damon answered uncertainly. The landlord had never invited him for food before.
"You know you're just skin and bones. A few dozen helpings of gingerbread will put some meat on you," the landlord said.
Damon couldn't help but think of his new neighbor Hans, and said as much, "You mean like Hans, next door?"
"Ah, he did have a good girth on him," the landlord said smacking his lips.
"Had?"
"Oh, has, I mean. It's just he moved suddenly. Dropped out of college, got a new position in - er, food services, I think. So if you know of anyone who needs an apartment. That one is available," the landlord said. He added, "Do stop in for some gingerbread, while he's-it's still warm."
Then he was gone again. Damon noticed how the floorboards creaked as the landlord walked away. Something was different. Could reality have changed in other ways besides his newly acquired powers? He could smell the rich scent of gingerbread in the air. He wasn't sure why the landlord should suddenly give him the creeps. Still gingerbread did sound good. Maybe he would use his invisibility power to sneak down to the landlord's and nab a bit of gingerbread. It wouldn't be stealing because he was invited, but he wouldn't have to engage in any creepy conversation. It was really odd about Hans moving too. He had just moved in a month ago or so.
Damon undresses and goes to try some gingerbread...
