Caleb opened slowly opened his sapphire blue eye's.
His room was mostly dark, lit by only a few streaks of light shining through the blinds. The boy slowly turned his head sideways, rubbing his eyes as he did so.
Saturday; 9:30, the clock on his wooden desk read.
Caleb gave a slow yawn, stretching his arms up as he did so.
Well, he thought to himself, might as well get going.
He pulled his feet out of the cover's, stepping onto the cold but familiar floor of his bedroom.
Caleb brushed his cover's aside, revealing his 15 year old-thinly built frame. He stood up to his full height of 5'11.
The teenager opened his door and trailed the railing with his left hand as he stepped down the stair case, entering the living room.
Caleb instantly took in the red couch and was about to take a seat, when something on the dinner table caught his eye.
He stepped toward the table and reached down to pick up the carefully folded note, which he held up to the window's early morning light.
"Dear Caleb," he read the familiar hand-writing "Please don't forget to wake me up at 9:30 for my medicine. Love you, Mom." he finished.
He took a second to think about this and his heart sank. His mother, Sarah, had been very sick for several days now. He had hoped in vain that she might get better over-night, but clearly life had different plans.
Caleb sighed and looked around the dimly-lit house. As the only child of a single mother, he and his mother had become quite close. Though usually, Caleb reflected, she is the one taking care of me. He hoped she would get well soon, as he was beginning to miss her sunny presence and constant chatting.
He shook himself out of his worries. "If I want her to get better, than I have to give her her medicine now." Caleb rationalized
Looking around, he tried to remember where she said her meds were...
A sudden knock at the door jolted him out of his thought process.
"Who on earth could that be," he wondered as he briskly walked to the door and opened it.
Nobody appeared to be around, he thought, as he looked across the suburban sidewalk.
Caleb almost closed the door, when he looked down and spotted something a little strange. There was a brown, medium sized package on the porch, seemingly unmarked. "Huh" he said to himself as he brought it inside.
Opening it up, he found the contents to be even more strange; a row of pill bottles, with very confusing label's that Caleb couldn't pronounce.
Realization dawned on him. "Mom said the med's would arrive today." he looked at the clock. "Right on time to."
He opened one of the bottles and found the instructions. "Dissolve two tablets in a ingest-able liquid and give to subject."
Pretty simple, he thought.
He turned his head as he heard beeping. That would be her morning tea.
Caleb opened up the microwave, grabbed the tea, and gently dropped two of the tablets in the drink.
The tea fizzed for a moment, then settled appearing completely normal.
"Wow," Caleb remarked "it dissolves really fast."
He grabbed the medicine laced tea, and walked down the hallway to his mother's bedroom.
He gently knocked on the door.
Caleb heard a long yawn, followed by a feminine sigh. "Come in," said the pleasant voice of his mother.
Caleb opened the door and looked at his mother. Sarah was 5'3, with a petite frame and big blue eye's that matched her son's. She was wearing her light green pajama's and She had long, lightly colored brown hair, with a tired but welcoming smile.
"Hey hon." she greeted.
"Hi mom," Caleb returned her smile, and Sarah felt a pang of sentiment. He looks just like his father, she thought.
"How are you?" he asked
"Oh, you know, about the same." she replied "Is that my medicine?" she inquired, looking at the tea in Caleb's hands.
He grinned. "Sure is, I mixed it in with your favorite tea."
Her tired face lit up. "Oh thank you sweetie," she said, taking the cup. Caleb watched his mom take a long sip.
"Mm-mm," she reflected "I think it tastes even better than normal."
Caleb gave a knowing smile. "Glad you like it, Mom." She took another long drink, enjoying the feeling of the liquid flowing down her throat.
"I'll be here if you need me mom," Caleb went to the door and stepped into the hallway.
"Oh and Caleb," Sarah looked up.
"Yeah?" he asked
"I love you." she said with a grin. "I love you to, Mom" Caleb replied as he walked down the hallway, and back into the living room.
Caleb was once again about to flop onto the couch, when he looked at the table and saw something else. He reached down to pick up his mother's note and flipped it over, surprised to find a backside.
"P.S. I left my medicine in the front drawer in the kitchen, just a reminder" the note read.
Caleb looked up, puzzled. Wait if her medicine was in the drawer, then what did I just give her? Oh no...He felt a tremor of fear as he looked over to the open package. He took a step toward it.
He was interrupted by a sudden moan, coming from the bedroom. "Mom!" he raced down the hallway and stepped into the room.
His mother was lying in a fetal position, looking away from Caleb.
"Caleb," Sarah gasped "I feel so....Strange." She let out another moan, slightly louder than before.
Horrified, Caleb jumped to her bedside, and put his hand on her shoulder. "Mom! Are you ok?" he stammered nervously.
Sarah gasped again "I...I..." she moaned a third time and began to tremmer slightly.
Caleb felt his heart rate rising. What was happening?
Caleb could only stare in shock. It felt like her shoulder was...expanding?
He looked down, find that her feet almost reached the length of the bed.
He stared at her in shock. Is my mom...growing?
"I'll be right back, mom!" Caleb sprinted down the hall and quickly picked up one of the pill bottle's.
"Experimental Transformation Serum," it read "Subject will grow in size and transform into a specified creature, effect's may vary."
"Oh my god..." Caleb rushed back down the hall, and stopped in the bedroom doorway, heart pounding. His mother was transforming...
