Nate Anderson proudly wore the gold chain that his boyfriend Alex Ramsey gave him as a token of their love.
He was kind of disappointed that no one at Moon Lake High School said anything about it. Then again, the chain around his neck wasn't as significant as say, a single pearl necklace around a were-mermaid's neck to indicate she was engaged to be married, like Julie Stovall would someday become his younger brother Eric's wife.
But the chain, and Alex, were both important to him, so it would be a cold day in hell before Nate ever took it off; especially since Alex got it over sized so it could still be worn even when Nate was in his husky lupine fursona as a happy werewolf, another fantasy Moon Lake fulfilled for him.
Now it was lunch time.
The Junior Class sat in the school cafeteria, chatting about all the regular stuff any other teenagers would discuss.
Nate and Alex were no exception, until Nate's cellphone vibrated in his pants pocket.
Before and after school, as well as during lunch were the only times Nate could have it on during the day in accordance with school regulations. He retrieved the device, but was puzzled by the text that just arrived.
"Everything all right Stud?" asked Alex, using his pet name for Nate.
"I'm not sure. Listen to this: EVERYTHING'S FINE. HOPE YOU'RE HAVING A NICE DAY. SEE YOU AT HOME FOR SUPPER. LOVE MOM."
"Doesn't sound strange to me. Out of the blue maybe, but..."
"No. Messages from mom are more like, Dad and I are running late, or Can you stop by the store and... or, at least since we've all became weres, I'll be over at so and so's.... Of course, the rest of that last one doesn't take a genius to figure out."
"Yeah. You're mom really has embraced her new lifestyle, hasn't she?" asked Alex.
"Don't get me wrong. I'm happy we can both be who we really are now," began Nate, as he gave Alex a loving smile, "but still..."
"If it bothers you that much, why don't you just call her?" suggested Alex.
Nate agreed that was a good idea, and was about to do so, when the bell rang indicating that the Junior Class lunch break was over and that they'd have to get to their respective study hall rooms so the Senior Class could have lunch.
With that, Nate resigned himself to just sending his mother a reply to her text.

With that, the two boys and lovers went on about the rest of their school day.
