Cassandra, or Cass as her friends called her, wasn't a good liar, but she was no fool. She had read enough stories to know that any object with great power also usually brought great problems. She wanted the ring, she liked it, but she didn't need some crazy person coming after her for it, or someone stealing it from her to use it against her. Therefore, she decided to take some safety measures.
"Okay," Cass started. "I wish that no one but me will ever know about the ring, no one but me will notice the ring, and no one but me can ever use the ring...oh, and I wish that there is no way I could lose the ring." Cass squinted at the ring, waiting for something to change, but nothing happened. Skeptical, Cass reached for the ring and tried to take it off...but it remained stuck on her finger as though it were a part of her. "Well, at least that part works," she thought. "But now what?"
Trying to keep wild ideas for crazy wishes out of her head, Cass remembered one more thing. "I wish that any changes resulting from my wishes will be seen as normal by everyone else, and no one thinks its strange unless I want them to. There, that should do it."
Turning options over mentally, Cass decided to start small. "I wish I had a hundred dollars in my hand." Before she could blink, a fresh, crisp one-hundred dollar bill was clutched in her hand. "Wow..." she couldn't help saying before quickly stuffing the money into her dresser. However, as she did so, she remembered her prior wish, and slowly drew it back out. Deciding to test the wish, Cass walked downstairs where her mother was preparing dinner. She placed the money on the counter in front of her.
"Hey mom, you left some money out," Cass started a little nervously.
"Oh, thanks Cass, wouldn't want to lose that," her mom smiled, wiped her hands on her apron, and put the money in her purse as though she always left one-hundred dollar bills lying around. Her mind whirling at the possibilities, Cass went back upstairs to her room. She could wish for anything, and it would be fine! Money, power, popularity, beauty, strength, you name it! She could turn herself into a hero like she read about in her books, or just satisfy her own every whim. But were there limits to the ring's power? Where to start exploring?
Cass flopped down on her bed and stared at the bookshelf. There were all sorts of books there, from history to science to fantasy. Plenty of stories telling the reader not to abuse power because karma would bite back. But most of those were hypothetical, of course; none of the writers actually had seemingly-omnipotent power. Even if she did abuse the power, who would know?
Still, Cass was self-aware enough to be careful. Best to start out slow, and build up to bigger and better things. A smile creeping across her face, Cass began, "I wish..."
