The confiscated cellphone continued to play its Dukes of Hazard ringtone as Yamato and Daisuke Tachibana looked at each other before turning to face the apprehended suspect Jackson.
"You want to save yourself or go down with your boss?" Daisuke asked, hoping their spur of the moment decision was the right one.
"I'll cooperate," promised the second henchman of Dieter Wilhelm, even as Yamato was hastily taking the cellphone out of its evidence bag and rigging it with a recording device.
They were all a bit concerned when the ringing stopped, and waited in case Wilhelm decided to leave a voicemail message, but he was too smart to do so.
Thinking they missed their chance, Daisuke was about to have Jackson resume writing his statement when the suspect's cell started ringing again.
This time, Yamato started the recording device and indicated Jackson should answer.
"It's about fucking time!" cursed Dieter Wilhelm on the other end of the conversation.
"Sorry boss. Had to find a place to pull over. I'm getting out of town as fast as I can," claimed Jackson.
"So it's over? That bastard that's been trying to muscle in on my Jenny has been taken care of?" Wilhelm wanted to know.
"Yeah," was all Jackson would say.
"Great!" exclaimed Wilhelm, with genuine excitement. "I'll be in Moon Lake bright and early Saturday morning with her family to bring my girl home. Where are you right now?"
"Err... heading towards Montana. Think I'll rough it and lie low for a while," replied Jackson, not knowing what else to say.
"Good idea. When you make it back home, look me up and we'll settle. Of course by then, I'll be on my way to becoming a proud father, so you can expect something extra to celebrate," bragged Wilhelm.
"Looking forward to it. See you then," said Jackson, before nodding to indicate it was time to hang up.
With the call ended, the Tachibanas never said a word as Daisuke pointed to the legal pad and pen that was on the table.
Jackson eagerly picked them up and started writing.
ON THE OTHER SIDE of the one way glass between the interrogation and observation rooms...
"So, what do you think?" Police Chief O'Hara asked the Moon Lake District Attorney.
"Promising, but not an actual confession," began the DA, thinking the situation over. "Yet Dieter Wilhelm clearly indicated his intentions towards Jennifer Harper to bring her back to Alabama and get her pregnant, despite the fact we know her actual intentions toward both Wilhelm and Harold Jenkins. We definitely have enough to at least hold the man for questioning and use our evidence to attempt souring relations between him and the rest of the Harpers, which might help Jennifer out in the long run. It will come down to what the suspect writes and what other evidence we can gather between now and Saturday morning. I assume the ruse about having two different weddings is still a go?"
"Yes. The first early to officially make Harry and Jenny a happily married couple, and the second at the bride's insistence to give her family one last chance to see the error of their ways. Doctor Twist says making the attempt is important to Jennifer's well being, and Frances and Samantha are paying for the second ceremony. Although, based upon what I know about her family, it probably won't work because at least the Harper men might be as bad as Dieter Wilhelm," replied Chief O'Hara.
"I see," said the DA. "Well, whatever happens, we can still keep our prisoner on the attempted murder charge of Harold Jenkins, Junior. That's a pretty solid case as it is. By the way, how's Jenkins doing?"
"Last I heard, still in surgery, but the doctor there is hopeful," answered Chief O'Hara, a bit behind on the latest news.
"Well, keep alert. Make sure Wilhelm truly doesn't have any more agents either all ready in or on their way to Moon Lake. Otherwise we'll just have to finish preparing our defenses, keep our fingers crossed, and hope for the best come Saturday morning. Especially when it comes to defending the town's secrets," said the DA, before he picked up his briefcase and left.
