The thing most people would describe about Jane if they saw her was that she was average. In fact, she was so average, people often have trouble noticing her in the first place. For a sixteen year old, Jane wasn't much to look at. She had mousy brown hair, dull brown eyes, mostly clear complexion, and a body that while not completely flat, didn't boast much regarding curves. It wasn't that Jane was particularly ugly. Her features, while unremarkable, were not repulsive. She was stuck right in the middle between homely and comely, a state that could be described as 'bland'.
And it wasn't just her body that was average. Jane didn't really excel in any particular field: athletics, academics, arts, music, popularity. She wasn't really bad at one thing, but she was never truly good at them either. You would think this complete lack of skill would make her a target for bullies, but she was so uninteresting, that bullies tended to not even notice she existed.
Jane herself was not happy with her life. She felt like a big lump of clay that no one wanted to mold into anything. She wanted her life to mean so much more and not be so nondescript. So it was to her great fortune when she walked into the magic shop.
The shopowner took one look at her and said, "I know exactly what you need." He went to the back and brought back a small box containing a ring. "I normally don't offer this ring to just anyone, but I think you are in greater need of this than anyone." He carefully explained how the ring worked for Jane, of how she could use it to merge with other beings and take on their traits.
"Why are you offering me this?" asked Jane.
"Because I can see what you are. You are what we refer to in the magical community as a 'blank slate'. You have potential to be anything, but lack clear indication in any direction," said the wizard, "The ring will probably be more successful with you than most. You're a brilliant ball of clay and it's time that you mold yourself into who you want to be."
Jane wasn't exactly certain what the wizard meant, but she could see that now she had the ability to remake her life. All she need to do was to find the right person to merge with. Hopefully, her own traits won't diminish the fusion too much.
