"Show?" I was still really confused by what I thought I had seen, but I knew it just wasn't possible. The shoes were bigger than I thought at first, obviously. But I felt sorta weird. Not quite dizzy, not quite disoriented, but almost. Then I actually did look in the mirror and I forgot everything else I was thinking about.
The reflection was me, but a me that had not existed since I graduated High School! Certainly no more than 19, I had lost my five-o'clock shadow,- the only facial hair I had were eyebrows and a wispy mustache. And as I stared, the me in the mirror got even younger, losing the mustache and inches of height. Maybe 17 now, and there were some other changes going on as well. My hair had a definite reddish cast, and my teeth looked and felt odd. And what was happening to my skin? The tanned, even complexion I had always had was obviously lighter, and seemed almost mottled.
It wasn't until my ears began to stick out from what was now obviously copper-red hair that I realized what was happening. The discomfort in my mouth increased, like having a thousand pieces of meat stuck between my teeth. When I opened my mouth to look, light glinted off of silver braces on oversized, slightly crooked teeth. And the mottling separated out into a scattering of freckles.
It was all so strange and impossible that I kept staring for a couple of minutes after the changes had stopped. The boy in the mirror mostly looked like I had when I was 13 or 14, but with a tangle of red hair, freckles all over, and ears that stuck out like handles. I had what the kid I'd seen before had left behind!
The woman nodded in approval. "A perfect fit. But now I need to find a home for you. Can't have any of my boys homeless."
