You wake up the next morning with a yawn. Everything looks blurry, but you chalk it down to sleepiness. Fumbling your way out of bed in the pre-dawn dark, you clumsily make your way to the bathroom and turn on the light.
At first, you notice your pajamas feel baggy, but that doesn't register. Neither does the fact that everything seems a little taller than usual. However, something is wrong when you drop your pants to sit on the toilet. Something is very wrong. Something is there that shouldn't be...can't be. Without pulling up your pants, you shuffle to the mirror and squint at your reflection, which is still a blur. However, as you reach down you know you aren't dreaming, and as you feel your chest, something is definitely missing. Although a bit unclear, the reflection staring back at you is not that of a 20-year-old muscular woman. Instead, it is that of a 14-year-old boy.
At first, panic sets in, but it is quickly dispelled by a stream of logical thoughts. Similar events have happened in the past, people experiencing wild changes, you've heard of this. Some sort of energy wave. Perhaps it altered your DNA, or maybe it changed the laws of physics. As a rich supply of theories begin rolling around in your head, you begin to realize that you were never this scientifically savvy before. You weren't ignorant, but book-learning had never been your thing, so you only studied what you needed to know. This level of thought is beyond you, or at least, it was. Now, however, little things you had heard or read and never thought about suddenly made sense, and fit together like a jigsaw puzzle in your mind. Leaning across the sink, you get close to the mirror and finally get a somewhat clear view of your new face. No longer are you the athletic, tough female boxer. Instead, you now find yourself in the body of a scrawny, myopic 14-year-old male genius.
You know there are ways to get help for people in situations like yours, but you slide to the floor in disbelief. If you can't change back, all your dreams, gone like that. Even if you can, after being changed, will you even be allowed to compete? Do you try to hide what has just happened to you? If you are one of the Gifted Ones who can change between forms, maybe you can hide it. No one would have to know. But would it be right, or even possible? And if you did hide it, what if someone found out?
