"Okay people, listen up!" began Sheriff Cooper, back in his human form as he came out of his office in one of the spare uniforms he kept in case of having to change into his werebear form while on duty. "First off, the werelion Council rep Leon Talbot will be joining us as a special observer, but he needs someone to find him some fresh clothes."
Some of Cooper's fellow officers just smiled and nodded their heads, for they had heard the altercation between the two weres, despite Cooper keeping his office door closed.
"Secondly, any and all civilian workers on duty, especially normals, are to be dismissed immediately with pay until further notice," said the Sheriff. "I have it on good authority that Fredrick Parker, aka Freddie the Shark, is going to try to bust his son out of jail sometime tomorrow while most of the town is at the Labor Day picnic instead of waiting till Tuesday and try to ambush the prisoner transfer on its way back to California like we originally suspected."
"Is that why you moved Daniel Parker to solitary?" asked one deputy, for very few people knew that the suspect was no longer in the building, being secretly transported to the FBI office in Seattle even as the Sheriff spoke.
"Yes. Only I have the key to that cell door, and you all know I won't be giving it up easily," replied Cooper, to which everyone present smiled in acknowledgement. "They don't know he's been moved, so they'll look for Parker in his previous cell first. Now then. I want every off duty law enforcement officer, except those like Deputy Carter who are on official medical leave, back here ASAP. Soon as we get enough people, first we'll establish a security perimeter around our headquarters. No one in or out without proper authorization. Then we'll set up road blocks in hopes of trying to cut off Parker's reinforcements from arriving in Moon Lake."
"How?" asked another man.
"We'll set up check points on every road from Oregon leading into town. We'll say we're cooperating with the Oregon State Police looking for an escaped fugitive trying to make his way to Canada," began the Sheriff, explaining his plan. "We'll only be able to arrest those in obvious blatant violation of the law, like having a trunk full of weapons, but at least we'll still be aware of who comes through town and how many of them join up with Parker. Now then, I'll need a volunteer to double check our inventory in the armory while another goes and gets us some extra supplies. We have till dawn for sure to prepare, and I want us ready to repel the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse if necessary!"
MEANWHILE...
With Eugene Talbot driving, FBI Agent Reed in the back seat pretending to be a prisoner, and their actual prisoner Daniel Parker unconscious and secured in the trunk, a rather nondescript car left the Moon Lake Sheriff's office and started on its way to Seattle.
What neither law enforcement officer knew was that they were being watched.
"What do you think?" one man asked another, as they observed the car drive past them on its way out of town.
"The boss has had us sitting here on our keisters watching the place since we arrived in town after his kid got arrested, but a root canal with no Novocaine would be more fun," complained his partner. "Personally, I think he might have forgotten all about us."
"Maybe, but if the cops try to pull a fast one and sneak his son out of town..."
"I know. But the only thing interesting about the car that just passed us was the hot chick in the backseat."
"Yeah," said the first man, shifting his position behind the steering wheel to resume watching the Sheriff's office. "You know, for a small town, this Moon Lake has some pretty hot women."
"Yeah," agreed the man in the passenger's seat. "But no bars? Let alone anything more... adult? How's a guy supposed to get any action around here?"
"Beats me, but we better keep our minds on business because the last thing I ever want to do is get the Shark mad at me."
"Definitely!"
