You suddenly jolted awake and looked around at the dark forest that surrounds you but is most certainly not your bedroom. You quickly sit up and look around, feeling light headed all of a sudden. You let out a groan and rub your forehead. You look up at the person in front of you, seeing a young man not much older than your sixteen year old self.
"Terribly sorry about that, summoning spells can make the person traveling feel a bit off at first," he said, in a posh British accent that you'd normally find quite charming if you weren't feeling a massive panic attack coming on.
"What the hell?" your face accurately reflects the confusion you are feeling. You stand up and still feel a bit off balance but still begin to take in your surroundings. "Where am I? I was in my bedroom studying, I dozed off and now I'm in the middle of a forest?!"
"Ah, yes, I can explain that one. You see, I summoned you here. My name is Alistair." He offers a reassuring smile.
"Summoned? That's it, no more D&D for me. Time to find my way home." You turn and start to walk away from Alistair and further into the woods.
"I'm afraid you won't be able to return home until our objective is completed."
You slowly turn around and walk back to the young man. It's only then that you really begin to take in his period wardrobe. You're definitely not home, nor anywhere near it anymore. Your heart begins to race as your brain desperately tries to make sense of what is going on.
"Ok, what is going on? I demand an explanation right now."
"Like I said before, my name is Alistair. I'm an apprentice wizard and I summoned you here to be my familiar." You sit down on a nearby log and he kneels down in front of you. "Now, technically you are supposed to be my slave but I feel we would be better served as true equals. Partners if you will. My master has been kidnapped and is being exploited to create spells to serve the evil and vindictive prince that has hijacked our Kingdom while his father is away. I intend to rescue him, but I need help. This is why I summoned you. The spell was supposed to summon someone that would be sympathetic to my cause and be enthusiastic in helping. Are you that person or did I screw up another spell?"
You let out a deep sigh. "The world I come from also has had it's government hijacked by people who only mean to cause harm to others. So, I definitely am sympathetic. But I also have a school test tomorrow. I have a life back in my world. People will be worried if I disappear without a trace."
"And I can send you back to your world to the exact moment you left. I promise you I will. My magic will protect us. But I need your help and it would be so much easier if you were willing. Are you willing to help me?"
"Yes, I am. As long as you can return me to when I left. Now, what does a familiar do?" you ask.
"You are basically a partner in my magic and are transformed to suit the needs of any given situation."
You nod. You had always had an interest in transformation so this certainly fit in with that. You and Alistair stand up and he gestures to the other side of the clearing.
"This way to my cottage. I can explain more there." You follow the young wizard through the clearing and back to his house, wondering what the hell you've gotten yourself into.
