An Education in Wednesdayville

added by Qwertrew23 6 years ago BM I

Ian West threw his book bag on the ground, sitting in the old armchair by the fireplace he'd claimed years before. He released a moan of anger, running his hands through his scalp. It wasn't easy getting an education in Wednesdayville.
Ian had made it a goal to become the first college educated member of his family, and one of very few in town. It was incredibly difficult attending classes when you would never know what you looked like in a week. But Ian figured that if he enrolled part time at a nearby state school and went to a couple of classes a week, he'd be graduating eventually. By going two times a week and taking tree classes, he was doing fine. And the classes were large enough that no one noticed when he missed one or nine.
Most of the doctors and teachers and the like in town accidentally wound up here, trapped overnight or marrying into the town. But the town had been without legal representation for over seventy years when Attorney James Good woke up one morning a mouse. His wife was a cat. The funeral had been... sad, to say the least.
But Ian was vigilant, he would do this! Hopefully. On that Tuesday, Ian came back from a class in a panic. If he didn't go to class on Friday and take a test himself, he would fail the class. But Ian had no clue what he would look like in three days, let alone if he could hold a pencil.
One of the town's rules was to never tell the secret of Wednesdayville to anyone. This was mainly for their safety: anyone who tried to look into the town might end up stuck here forever. So Ian couldn't tell his professor. Instead he would have to see what that night would bring.
Ian took off his cap. The curse this week removed all hair from the townspeople, everywhere. He wore a hat to class and no one was the wiser, though he may have caught a girl looking at his absent eyebrows. He looked at his phone until his mother called him, his father and his sister to dinner. Tuesday night dinners were a big thing when possible, as no one ever knew what the other would look like twelve hours later.
Afterwards, Ian went upstairs to do some work, his mother calling up the fifteen minute warning that made Ian jump into bed. Rubbing his hairless body, Ian considered taking some time to explore it before he'd crash, though he didn't want to be found in that position in the morning if the change petrified him as it had once before. That week, people could levitate anywhere but not a muscle would move. It was an odd week for all. Then Ian heard the chiming and knew it was only a minute from happening. He shut his eyes and hoped that the next morning he would still be close enough to himself.

At 8:01 everyone woke and Ian looked at himself and found that...
