As you eagerly stepped into the dungeon halls, the door closing behind you and vanishing, you begin to sniff out more of your own kind, avoiding the scent of other monsters who aren't the same type as you (as you might fight each other if you get caught in friendly fire).
You find a pack of dog men and dog women like you, all armed with boomerangs of various size, material, and sharpness. The first thing you notice is that the rest of the pudgy dog people are naked except for different colored collars around their necks, (red, blue (like you), black, and silver). And their fur actually has color patterns that match their collars.
"We got a newbie." Barks one of the black males. "She still got the dress on!"
You take a step back, you may be willing to die over and over again to protect your Master's dungeon from the forces of goodness, but you don't like where this might be going.
"Oh don't worry about it sweetie!" Another blue female slaps you on the back. "He doesn't mean whatever you think he means! The dress is just for show! We toss 'em as soon as we learn the ropes! Those things went out of style years ago! The Master keeps handing them out to keep the bureaucrats happy!"
"Oh! Erm, thanks!" You stutter. "My name is-"
The other blue female shrugs. "Don't bother, none of us really have names anymore. Master says it might make the hero want to try and reason with us and make us join the side of goodness. I'm Female Blue Growlyap. You're Female Blue Growlyap. Nice to meet ya Female Blue Growlyap!"
She reaches out a paw.
"Oh, nice to meet you too... so, about the dress-"
"It's just until you beat your first hero, or you die for the first time. It lets the hero focus on you thinking you're something special."
"So the new ones are used as bait?" You sigh.
She laughs again. "Don't make such a fess about it! It's not like dying is a big deal in this business! You essence just respawns from the Monster Jar every time. The dungeon is always expanding, so we need new monsters to fill in all the space."
"And the colors?"
"That's for seniority and pecking order, congrats on being made a blue right off the bat, you wouldn't have wanted to be a red, their job is to just absorb damage from the heroes for the rest of us."
"Yeah yeah, say it when we're standing right here." Stand a scrawny Red male.
"Keep working on it, and you'll get promoted. Don't ask how, that's something the Master decides."
"Alright." You nodded.
