The strong, acrid stink of the bear was easy to follow. It was a female, and he thought he could tell she was young and healthy from her scent. Derrick's confidence left him and he cowered suddenly, cringing as the bear suddenly lunged forward.

The animal sat and used her massive forelimbs to pull him against her chest. The huge claws scraped over his skin, but did no damage because she was being careful. He was being examined by the female, and every inch of his body licked and slobbered on. As he was turned and flipped, Derrick got a good look at the female. He realized that something about the bear's odor had changed. It wasn't that she smelled different, it was that he liked the smell.
