You call your friend, Adam, while on your way home, telling him to meet you at your house. He's smart—he'll want to experiment with the socks.
You open your front door. You shout out, saying that you're home.
Silence. Nobody is home.
You shut your front door an make your way to your room. You turn on the light and close the blinds. Opening up your bag, you pull out the socks and study them. They're white with some green lining, but other than the shade of green, nothing unusual-seeming about them. You take off your shoes and your current pair of socks, and consider putting on the new pair.
The doorbell rings. You put down the socks and run to the front door. Checking the peephole, you see that it is Adam. You open the door. "Come in, dude." you say.
"Hey, Brian. Why did you want me to come over?" Adam asks.
"I have something to show you." You lead the way to your bedroom and sit down on the bed. Adam sits down next to you. You pull out the new socks.
"You seriously called me to show me a pair of socks?" Adam laughs. "I didn't think you were shallow."
"The clerk at the store told me that these socks can change you into a carbon copy of anyone, as long as you're wearing the socks and you put on someone else's shoes. I was wondering if you wanted to try it."
"Physically, chemically, and biologically, I can't think of a way for that to be possible, but I am curious to see if it works. Do you want to try it on each other?"
"Why not?" you ask. "Do you want to change into me first or do you want me to change first?"
"I'll let you change into me first," Adam says. He probably wants to watch the changes occur, if they do, and take mental notes on them. Or he didn't want to be the one to get hurt if something went wrong. Probably both.
You study Adam as you put the socks on. He's got medium-length blond hair, light blue eyes, is a couple of inches shorter than you, and skinnier than you, even though you're not fat. His skin is very pale. He pulls off his shoes and hands them to you. They're a size or two smaller than your own. You slip the shoes on, with your heel sticking out the back a little bit.
"Nothing is happening," you sigh after a couple seconds. "Wait…" you say, as you start to feel a bit weird. You and Adam run over to the mirror in the bathroom, Adam carrying a pair of your shoes, and you don't fail to notice that your feet now fit in Adam's shoes perfectly.
You watch your reflection in the mirror in astonishment as you lose a couple inches of height. Your clothes start to feel a bit looser as you lose a bit of weight. Your skin lightens a couple of shades. Your eyes change colour from dark brown to hazel to green to blue. The exact shade of Adam's eyes. Your hair's colour lightens from brown to blond. Light freckles appear on your face and your facial features change and soon match Adam's. After about a minute, you feel the changes stop, and you look exactly like Adam.
"Woah," you both say. "How do you feel, Brian? Or, should I say, Adam?" Adam asks.
"Really different. Being in your body feels…weird. Wow, I even sound weird. My voice is higher than normal. I have both some of your memories and all of mine. Not many of yours, just how you live. Just enough so that I could pass off as you, I think. And I guess that you should call me Adam now, because I am you now." You pull off the shoes and socks and hand the socks to Adam. "Your turn."
"Okay." He takes the socks and is about to put them on. "Wait. Maybe I should take off my clothes and put some of yours on first. I don't think my clothes would fit your, well, Brian's, body."
"Good idea." He goes into your wardrobe and starts changing. He throws his clothes over the door and you take off the clothes you had been wearing to put them on. He comes out dressed in clothes a few sizes too big for him, and you both go into the bathroom again. Adam slips on the socks, and then the shoes.
At first, nothing happens. Adam's feet are too small for the shoes, at first. But then the changing starts. "My feet are the right size for your shoes!" he exclaims. He grows to the height that you previously were, and his frame fills out a bit as he gains a bit of weight. His eyes change to brown, and his hair shortens and darkens to brown as well. His skin darkens and his freckles disappear from his face. After about a minute, he looked exactly like you used to. "You're right. Changing bodies does feel weird. Wow, my voice is deeper. And I have some of your memories. Well, anyway, I think you should call me Brian now, and I'll call you Adam. Adam."
"Okay, Brian," you respond. It feels weird calling your own (former) face your own name. Your own former name, now that you're Adam. "Do you want to play on the Xbox for a while? See if this changes how we play?"
"Sure," Brian responds. Both of you go and play Call of Duty for about half an hour. You realise you're playing more like Adam usually did. Well, you are Adam now, so it makes sense.
"I'm going to get a drink. You want anything, Brian?" you ask. It feels more natural now to call him Brian.
"No thanks, dude." When he was Adam, Brian never used to say 'dude'. That had been *your* thing.
You walk towards the kitchen to get yourself a drink, your body feeling normal now, natural.
While you're filling up your cup, the doorbell rings…
