During a videoconference, the answer to what happened was identified. Thanks to Harold's clues, the solution was absurdly simple.
---
"We figured it out." Said the scientist in charge of Project Chimera. "By following Harold's clues, we figured that Teela only got ONE dose made from a compatible/similar species, which led to her hybridization."
"First I tried two samples from similar snake species, added them to an anaconda tissue sample, and got the same results from the initial Chimera test." Said a second scientist. "The two virus strands tried to overwrite EACH OTHER, and the tissue sample was caught up as collateral damage."
"Next, I tried two different anaconda tissue samples with two different virus strands each." Said a third, "one of lion DNA, the other of goat. When the tissue samples died, I determined that, in the attempt to merge the lion DNA with the anaconda for example, both DNA strands were warped beyond usability. The same results happened with the goat DNA."
"We also found out that someone recently installed a powerful space heater in the lab that was planning an experiment in creating a strand of virus resistant to desert conditions." Said a maintenance guy at Horizon. "It ended up tripping a circuit breaker."
"My boy was also planning a fanfiction based off of Zechariah Sitchin's Earth Chronicles." Said a janitor, also at Horizon, "He was having a bit of a mental block, so I tried to come up with a story Idea, and wrote it on some scrap receipt paper. I set it by the experiment while I dealt with wastepaper baskets, and forgot I out it there. No one recognized my handwriting because my handwriting is somewhat of a tangled mess. That's why I use a computer word processor when I place orders."
"I decided to double check the message with Anne's package." Said a representative of the Nevada Crime Lab. "As it turns out, there were actually three or four differences between the package address and the note. Turned out to be hasty decision making before the fine print."
"I still say that there was something fishy going on." Said one lab assistant, while another accused him of seeing conspiracies where none exist. But for now they had some answers, but not all that they would like.
