You glance at the lady with her corgi scampering happily along in front of her, lowering your voice. "Ur...Keith. I better not turn you back right now, otherwise that lady will notice and who knows what will happen. How about I just take a drive around the block?"
The red fire hydrant does not respond.
"OK. Cool, knew you'd understand, Keith." You walk over to your brand new car, excited to take it for a spin. As you get in you see the corgi sniffing at your hydrant best friend, but look away as the short dog raises his hind leg. You hope Keith will understand you leaving him there, just for a short while. You needed a time parse what had just happened and how to fix your friend. If anything, the keys turning Keith into a dog and then a hydrant proved the device was highly unpredictable. Or maybe somewhat predictable. A hydrant was related to dogs. But what did that mean? The next time you'd use the keys he'd turn into a firefighter? Well, at least he'd be employed in that scenario.
You sighed and let yourself enjoy the drive. Maybe taking a brief interlude to the country roads would calm your nerves and find out how this Chevy Corvette could handle curves.
Hours pass before you think of Keith again, as you're watching the sunset from a lookout point. You shake yourself. How could you forget about Keith? To be fair, the new car was a lot of fun to drive and part of you wasn't looking forward to putting up with an angry Keith if you managed to turn him back. But that didn't mean you could leave him as a hydrant indefinitely either...
Maybe would be best just to drive home and figure this out in the morning.
