Mark huffed and sunk into his seat. As he sat there he felt his legs dangling over the edge and looking down he noticed the tips of the pink sneakers he wore wouldnt even touch the ground. Grumbling he folded his arms and pouted.
"Its not fair.." he mumbled to himself, looking up at "Jennifer" and hearing the other girls giggle.
"How come they get to have fun and I dont..." he thought, not realizing how childish it sounded.
"Hey, you ok?" The sudden young voice drew him out of his own thoughts. A girl stood at the edge of the seat staring at him. She was pretty, with curly shoulder length red hair and freckles and dark green eyes. She had on overalls and a pink shirt, and she wore a pair of old worn pink sneakers like his.
"OH uhm..." Mark said, not wanting to let on what was really going on. "Yeah. Just...you know..."
The girl frowned. "I saw how the others were treating you. I didn't think it was very nice so...uhm I wondered if you would mind if I sat with you."
Mark stared at the girl, surprised. She looked earnest but he suspected a trick. Even so...just having someone to talk to would be nice. "Uh, sure, I guess..." He said.
She nodded and sat next to him. "My name is Jess, by the way. First time going to this summer camp?" She asked.
"Yeah...I guess," Mark said. It felt weird sitting next to this little girl...hearing her talk to him as everyone else carried on their own conversations. He was jostled from his thoughts by a nudge at his feet, he looked down and Jess had kicked his shoes very lightly.
"I like your sneakers...theyre cool," She said, drawing back a strand of hair.
Somehow the compliment made Mark feel a little better. "Thanks. Uhm my name is Mar...Mary..."
