Mad Science

Back in Brazil...

added by makutamon 6 years ago O

While the IAC was going on in America, the Animalia Colony in Brazil continued to develop. In many places of the property, the undergrowth was cleared enough to allow work to begin. Because a treetop village was planned as part of the colony, several works of literature was considered for how it was to look. Ultimately, it was decided to use the description of the Ewok village from the original Star Wars: Return of the Jedi novel, primarily because of the way that torches and bonfires could be controlled to keep from setting things on fire.

There were a number of Boy Scouts taking part in the building, especially with the building of the treetop village. Some of them were working on Eagle Scout projects, others were applying their knowledge of knots to the project, and still others were helping rebuild the hotel.

One such problem that was addressed was the obtaining of clean water for the treetop village. Fortunately, there were a few native inhabitants willing to share their secrets of survival in the rainforest. One solution was the use of bromeliad flowers to provide a little water, but that solution led to a smarter solution: creating reservoirs out of natural materials, waterproofing them with natural rubber, and placing them high enough in the trees to catch rain during the lengthy rainy season, as well as store them during dry periods. An addition to the solution was the addition of special filters to get many contaminants out of the water.

Since one idea was to have one section of the village be "clothing-optional" and children had to be kept out, the plan was to wall off that area and have orangutan Animalians as guards of a sorts, keeping children out and also entertaining them as well. While orangutans were planned, it was decided to hold off on such upliftings until later.

Another place that was planned was a small museum for the new archaeological site. Because no two graves contained the exact same grave goods from the same tribes, it was determined that what was found was actually a meeting place between various Amazon River Basin tribes. The oral traditions of the Jerena tribe confirmed it, at least in part.

Mandíbula turned out to be a rather capable leader of the new colony. A male caiman of her species showed interest in her as she took a cool-off swim. After he was uplifted, he chose the name Crânio, being Portuguese for 'Skull', and matching Mandíbula's name, as well as being a good mate for her.

Just because the work was still going on didn't mean that anyone wasn't paying attention to the IAC. It was shown on TV in the break room, and various portable radios were tuned to the coverage of the games. It was something that made working on the Animalia Colony a lot more bearable, especially during the heat of the day.
