Moon Lake, Jenkins: The Warning

added by The Masked Writer 6 years ago O

After their lunch together, Trevor Tyson led Melissa Jenkins up to the attic of the Tyson house.
"Where did you get all this stuff?" she asked in amazement, looking around at all the trunks and boxes stacked around the space. Of course, the tops of most were a bit dusty, and there were cobwebs in the corners to make it look like a traditional attic, but there was far more up here than one might expect such a space to hold.
"They may not look it but being weres, both my parents are in their 50s, while appearing to be approaching their early 20s if they were normals," began Trevor, as he started leading Melissa to where the Halloween costumes were stored. "One collects a lot of stuff in their lifetime, as my dad says."
"That must go double for weres," realized Melissa, looking around.
"My mom would say triple, but yeah," agreed Trevor. Why do I always get so tongue tied around her? he wondered. It's as if I lose everything except the ability to breath and stare at her whenever Mel's around. "Anyway, here we are," he added, while opening the lid to the closest trunk.
"They're beautiful," said Mel, peering at the top of the garments inside.
"This and the one behind it are women's. The men's are in that larger one on the other side," said Trevor, pointing to a trunk sitting to the right. "Dad usually doesn't go much for the dressing up part of Halloween, but my mom really gets into it, especially when she took us Trick or Treating when we were younger. Anyway, help yourself," offered Trevor, as he opened up the other trunk and began rummaging.
"Is there a theme to the Halloween dance?" asked Mel.
"Other than having a good time, not that I've heard of. Why?"
"I was thinking maybe we could find costumes that go together. You know, like Superman and Wonder Woman."
"Romeo and Juliet?" suggested Trevor, then started blushing as he realized what he said.
"Good story, but I hate the ending. Keep thinking," replied Mel, as she got down on her knees to start digging deeper into her open trunk.
"If you find anything you like, you can check it out in this old mirror," said Trevor, as he went over to uncover an antique mirror that was standing in the corner.
"Oh. That's beautiful. Who's is it?"
"It belonged to my grandmother, until she left us."
"Oh. I'm sorry," said Mel.
"Not left as in passed away. Left as in decided she needed a vacation, put dad in charge of the farm, and took off on an around the world cruise earlier this year before you moved here."
"Oh," replied Mel, happy she didn't put her foot in her mouth any further than she might already had.

The two teenagers started going through the costume collection, asking each other about various outfits, when Trevor's mother called for him.
"Yeah mom?" he asked, shouting down the attic stairs.
"Sorry to bother you, but your father says he needs your help with something out in the barn for a moment," she explained.
"Okay. Be right down," yelled Trevor, before promising Mel he'd be back, then left.
Alone in the attic, Mel pulled out a beautiful red dress that reminded her of Jessica Rabbit, and carried it over to the mirror, because this was the closest she would dare get to even thinking about wearing something so... alluring, until her body developed more, with or without becoming a were.
She started looking at herself, holding the dress up to her body to stare at the reflection, when suddenly the image said, "Oh good. I found you. Since you ain't asleep, I haven't much time."

Mel was extremely surprised, and a bit frightened, to see her "mirror friend", especially not being in her own bedroom, let alone wide awake in someone else's house.
"Listen. Whatever you do, don't you and Trevor either eat any candy or drink the punch at the dance tonight," warned her reflection.
"Why?" asked Mel, even as she noticed that in the daylight, the reflection didn't quite look like either herself nor her dearly departed mother, but more like a combination of the two. Besides, she (it?) was wearing a totally different outfit than what either Melissa Jenkins had on at the moment or was holding against her body.
"I'm trying to protect your... our future, and Decrux is up to her dirty tricks again," explained her(?) image.
"Okay. No punch or candy," promised Mel. "Anything else?"
"Watch out for boy raccoons and try the other trunk," the mirror said with a smile, before the image suddenly changed to what Mel thought it should be, herself holding the red dress.

When Trevor came back into the attic, he started to apologize for the delay, but then saw that Mel was still staring at herself in the mirror.
"Is something wrong?" he asked, not sure what to say about the dress, because he would love to see it on (or off) Mel.
"I'm not sure," admitted Mel, before explaining what happened while he was gone.
"Wow," was all Trevor could say when she finished. "Have you had premonitions before?"
"Not that I can swear to, and certainly not before I moved to Moon Lake."
"Well..." said Trevor, moving a bit closer to her. "What do you want to do?"
"We're still going to the dance," promised Mel, before giving him a brief peck on the cheek, "but shouldn't we warn everyone?"
"And say what? My mirror warned me? Moon Lake is a special place, but that's a bit out there, even for us. Besides, even if Decrux does try something, she certainly wouldn't be the first person to ever spike a punch bowl around here or anywhere else. The candy is a first though."
"Yeah," realized Mel, as she leaned against Trevor for comfort and support.

Trevor liked the fact that Mel was against him. With him being the taller of the two, she came up to just below his nose. He lovingly put his arms around her and just held Mel close until she was ready to go on.
Finally, Mel said, "Okay. No candy. No punch, and we're careful of boy raccoons. Now let's find our costumes for tonight."
With new resolve, Mel went back and put the red dress in the trunk she had been searching through.
Then she opened the one behind it.
There, right on top, was the exact same outfit her mirror friend was wearing when she came with her warning!
"I've got mine!" Mel shouted happily, pulling out the costume to show Trevor.
"Wait a second," he replied, digging through the trunk he barely started going through before being called away. "And here's it's mate," Trevor said excitedly, pulling out the matching costume to the one Mel was holding.
"Then we're all set for tonight!" declared Mel. And watch out Decrux, for the one thing you never do in this world is get on the wrong side of a Jenkins!
