The gray-ish glass of the crystal ball swirled into technicolor, like a series of rainbow storm clouds. The image began to fuzz into place, and the smoky colors straightened into patterned lines, plaids, with the shadows of collars and buttons. When the picture settled, the plaid shirt moved aside by a calloused hand to reveal half a head of short, bleached hair, much like future Robbie's. Behind the hair was more collared, plaid shirts—flannels, Robbie realized.
The shirt moved aside to reveal Caroline's face, like the crystal ball was a camera inside her closet. her face, though, was different. The left side of her head was clearly shaved, with the short vestiges of brunette roots just poking through her scalp. Her nose was pierced, just a small button piercing, but what made her most unrecognizeable was the thick-rimmed glasses adorning the top half of her face. Round, tortiseshell glasses, giving her a somewhat soohisticated look.
Caroline tilted her head, as if listening. The crystal ball had no comprehensible, so robbie couldn't make out what was said, but she appeared not to be alone. Caroline turned and yelled towards something not visible in the glass, revealing her back and bra strap, with a rainbow clasp. Robbie raised an eyebrow—did that mean...?
A ginger woman with her nails painted soft pink emerged into the crystal. Caroline faced her, and picked up two flannels in succession, placing them in front of her to show of, asking the woman to pick. She picked the second one, a blue-green plaid with rolled up sleeves. Caroline donned a black beanie and kissed the ginger woman on the cheek. Robbie gasped. All this time, Caroline was gay too. He squealed in delight, calling out to her, "Caroline! Come in! Come in before it—"
When he looked back, the crystal ball had swirled back to its grayish hue.
Caroline rushed in, panting. "What? What is it?"
Robbie smirked. "It's gone, damn. Anyway, I just really think it's great. The future's going to be great, Caroline. Good things ahead."
The lady behind the crystal ball smiled. For a brief second, the ball flashed a rainbow, then back to gray. No one saw, but the light reflected off it and onto Caroline and Robbie as they left the tent.
