You're not sure to make of what you just saw and heard, but to put it bluntly you're terrified.
You turn and start to run away from where the statue had been. You only make it a few strides before you trip and fall into a small pond nearby. You stand up, startled and wipe the muddy water out of your eyes. Looking down at the mess you've made of your clothes, you see a dim shadow under the water just a few feet away.
The effect is fast. You start to turn to get out of the water, but feel your body start to shrink. You look at your skin and see it start to take a silvery cast as scales start to grow randomly across your body, but forming up into neat little rows as your skin gets tighter and tighter. You start to panic and want to run out of the water, but you start to gasp for air at the same time your legs give out and you fall to the waters surface. The relief as water fills your new gills is palpable. You try to stand, but realize that your legs are now fused into a tail, so as you try you propel yourself awkwardly more deeply into the pond.
It is only a few more minutes before the final changes finish, and you're a fish.
You're not sure what kind of fish you are, you're have no idea what kind live here. Worse, the pond isn't that large and has no outlet, so you're stuck in here for the rest of your life.
It's not long before your new lover appears, hovering around you while you figure out how to swim. You're not sure if it's a him or a her. It's not long before you find out. Around dusk, you find yourself drawn to the silt at the bottom of the pond and you start to make a small nest. It's not long before you're depositing small, translucent eggs into it while your lover of sorts comes along and fertilizes them.
It's a decidedly unromantic and unfulfilling encounter. And once it's over, your fish friend wanders off, leaving you to fend for yourself in the pond.
