Vaccination and Integration

added by Alphagor 5 years ago O

Heather's attack caused quite a stir across the nation. People who were confident that Animalians were harmless now had a bit of doubt. Hatemongers were using this opportunity to fan the flames. They were talking about how any Animalian could go nuts and start infecting everyone and if they were so safe, why would they go to a separate school from humans? Unfortunately, people were prone enough to panic to listen to some of these people and some of those hatemongers were in higher positions in the government.

But fortunately, Animalia has been able to counter some of those arguments. The attack on Sophie and Roland was an isolated incident; the result of a single madwoman acquiring the Animalian Virus illegally and transforming herself into a carnivore. The fact that said carnivore was a hybridized dinosaur was another arguable factor. No one knew before that the Animalian Virus could interact with the DNA in fossilized bones, let alone be able to blend several specimens together. As was grudgingly accepted, Heather's brain was altered by her transformation and made her predatory instincts a lot stronger. If Heather had been more mentally stable or had gone through the New Species Acclimation classes, she wouldn't have gone so far. Some hatemongers were saying that Heather got off too lightly just so Horizon Labs could learn how to create more Dinotopians, but Animalia retorted that the gold confiscated from Heather was a very significant sum and her house arrest was almost as strict as actual prison.

But even if Heather weren't an issue, there was still the issue about vaccination and integration. The people argued that if they could send their children to school with other races and had mandatory vaccines given to them, why should Animalians be the exception? Admittedly, there were some people who were against vaccines altogether, but Animalia had living proof why vaccines are needed in the form of Zoe. It was then that Animalia had to admit something: the vaccines were not as permanent as everyone thought. Yes, they could sterilized an Animalia's contagiousness for some time, but the virus was such an integral part of the DNA that, eventually, it would recover enough to be able to spread to other hosts. The vaccine that was currently being used by Horizon Labs was expected to only last about a year before it would need to be re-administrated.

There was not nearly as much backlash by this admitting as was expected. Even people who were anti-vaccination argued that if their pets had to get an annual rabies shot, the Animalians could deal with a little prick once a year. The government came to an agreement about this. Considering how an Animalian pandemic could be possible if not regulated, all Animalians were expected to receive an annual vaccination shot. There were a few exceptions. Animalians who spent a long time away from human contact were not as strictly enforced to be vaccinated. There were some Animalians who wished to convert or double-dose their mate through more intimate acts, so they would receive a temporary virus boost that usually lasted three days, but said Animalians had to remain quarantined until the boost wore off.

As for the concern of integration, SWA was not condemned for being an example of segregation as larger Animalians required more specialized infrastructure for comfort. But smaller Animalians, once vaccinated, could return to Lyre High to continue their education. A third intermediary school building would be built to allow better human/Animalian student interaction. Said school would take some time to be constructed, but for the time being, having Animalians attend Lyre High and having humans comes to WSA on Visitation Days should keep the integration from degrading.

As for Project Thylacine, and the eventual Project Dinotopia, no laws were passed to forbid either project, but there would be constant regulation. Not every species that could be brought back from extinction would have a place in the natural world. The Caribbean island that Animalia was considering buying might be a good place for Dinotopians to go to as it would be in a tropic climate that would be beneficial to their reptilian physiology. Conversion for normal Animalians were not made less attainable as some feared. There wasn't a restriction for children under eighteen, especially if they went through Project Phoenix. But there would be a stricter psychoanalysis to determine of any instabilities that are preexisting or could exacerbated by animal instincts. There would be mandatory classes for dealing with the instincts that would come with their new forms, but they weren't much more extensive than the New Species Acclimation classes.

Animalia has had a very, very close shave. It reminded everyone that they were a little closer to the edge than they thought. But if Animalia was to continue integrating with the rest of human society and begin to recreate extinct species, it was clear that more planning and thought was to put into their efforts.
