He fluttered past some of the large windows on the side of the house, hoping to catch sight of Barney.
As his delicate fluttery flight helped him hover, he used his weird compound eyes to peer into the interior of his now gigantic home. No sign of Barney!
If he had looked through an upstairs window, he might have caught sight of Barney returning to Jeff's room. His parents kept parental controls locked on Barney's computer, so the 14-year-old was always sneaking into Jeff's room to use his older brother's computer. Although he had missed it earlier, Barney took notice of the strange program on display in a browser window on his brother's computer.
Meanwhile, Jeff flew over a wide hedge, becoming more comfortable with directing his flight with subtle flicks of his thin, colorful wings. A shadow passed over him, and then a second one.
"What's that?" He wondered. He dropped onto a windowsill just above the hedge.
Suddenly two birds dropped down, using their talons to clutch at perched in the top of the hedge planted in front of the house. They looked as big as Godzilla. One of them hopped closer to him, beak open wide.
"Stay back!" Jeff cried and took flight. The second bird spread its wings and lunged toward him.
"No!" Jeff cried as he felt the bird's beak snap closed around his body.
The bird flew to the ground as Jeff struggled to free himself. "Oh no! Please, let me go!" Jeff wanted to scream. He was screaming in his own head. "Don't eat me!"
The bird used surgical skill to detach one of his wings.
Jeff saw the wing fall onto the ground. A second wing, severed with precision, followed.
Then, the first bird returned and inched closer, but the second bird snapped its beak at the interloper, not wanting to share.
Jeff tried to fly, but with his two forewings removed, it was impossible and his thrashing only attracted the attention of both hungry birds as they turned their beady eyes on him.
